Won't it be on the M plate?

    M plate is 1st Aug 73 to 31st Jul 74. L is right unless you're American and read his as 1st Sept 73 :D

It all depends whether somebody got there first and "upgraded" the part you need to another year ..or VW fitted a different year part anyway.
Post a picture of what you need to replace and you will probably get advice on which shirt to wear.
    Maybe somebody can actually help.

  7. The registration date of a vehicle is arguably irrelevant. You need the build date which can be got from the M plate.
VW worked on "model years" - August through to end of July, rather than calendar years.
The "72" model year would have been August '71 to end of July '72.
The "73" model year would have been from August '72 to end of July '73.
Your chassis number will tell you whether you have a '72 or '73 model year if you don't go down the M plate route.
When ordering parts always state when the vehicle was built, so as not to avoid confusion. Helpful to quote chassis number when doing so.

^^ this. That thread is very useful.
Mine left VW in early Feb '73 (although I still don't know if that means it had been to Westfalia already or not) and does have a few prototype bay parts so you'll probably find a few on yours.
I think the likes of JK and VWH are getting better in their denominations for 72/73 bits but it's always worth checking!
