Nice weather today so after watching the MotoGP spent a few hours on the van.
Tidied up the chassis and threw a few cans of etch primer on.
Also, made some slots so I could put the loom through the chassis (was hanging below) and also the clutch conduit.

What diameter is the tube for the loom to go through?

A few pic of the etch primered chassis (Nearside first)

Another quick question - are these rear drums worth salvaging or better off buying new?

    Cheers

  2. Are they original and how big is the lip. Bentley has wear limit measurements for drum which is handy if you have a 12". Internal micrometer!
Repro may not be as round or concentric as you might wish
    Good luck

  3. Aye, they are original - don't have a 12 inch micrometer though.
    So probably worth saving then!

  4. Can you feel much of a lip on the edge of the wear area?

  5. One is visible - but looks to be less than 1 mm.

  6. That sounds promising, Bentley states 252mm new with a limit of 253.5mm, so you may be better off giving them a damn good clean.

  7. Will do and see what I end up with :)

Carried on pluggin away last night.
Trying to remove a broken bold - attempted to weld a nut onto what is left but when trying to twist it out, the nut just comes off - looks like I will need to go to full power.........

Spent some time using a flap disk on the drums to get the surface rust off - looking better:

Run out of 13 mm nuts so will find something else to do :)

  9. Knotted wire brush on the grinder will bring the drums up a treat

  10. Cheers dude - will get one and give a go!

  11. Wear some thick leather gloves and eye protection when your using it though
They can be evil buggers at times

  12. Aye (or should that be eye...)!

  13. Sage advice, lost count of the times I've pulled the broken wire ends out of my skin when they fly off at speed and into me, would hate to think what it would do to an eyeball!!

Well - spent a few hours on the van this afternoon!!
One of the rear trailing arms was missing the bump stop cap (not sure what you call it).
Thanks to Hilly from the Earlybay forum, he gave me a couple of old/used CO2 canisters which I butchered to create the bump stop.

    Started with this:

Cut the end of and ended with this:

Tidied up the cut and sanded down the top of the trailing arm so I could weld it on:

    Welded on :)

Will now paint the parts in epoxy paint now and look to start putting it all back together!

    Cheers

  15. soak em in vinagar ..

  16. Yeah - read them somewhere - has to be white vinegar mind so will have a look into that :)

  17. This is better than vinegar

  18. That Swarfega stuff is 3 times the cost for the same volume of white vinegar, so is it 3 times better?

  19. Yes because it's concentrated so makes more than the bottle contains it also works faster.
It cleans up corrosion a treat
