Match devon interior chipboard colours...

  1. Hi, this van has the chocolate and beige late interior. 1980 ies chipboard.
Companies have said this can't be matched
-is this a challenge for the late bay ? (Not the a-team).

The rock n bed uses 8mm beige. I may consider 10mm.
    Who sells this please?
    In any kind of board?

  2. @mikedjames Q for you (possibly)
It's quite expensive if i remember what Mike told me at Techenders last weekend

I presume you actually mean the laminate not the chipboard, I'd 're do it in ply and go online to find Formica in a multitude or colours from various suppliers, just stick it on with contact adhesive, score with a new Stanley blade and snap to cut sizes.

  4. Hi Flakey and Paulcalf!
I was hoping not to make everything myself.....! Too Optimistic maybe.
An 'off the shelf' board would be nice (there's bathroom MDF and chipboard /in wrong colours so far but I'd rather not).
I expect it to cost a lot and have a lot of offcuts (still will ask Stanford hall traders anyways).
    Everything does.
Ps : when I write beige it writes magnolia...
PPS :50 shades of beige so far not even close.

    CollyP and paulcalf like this.
  5. B e I G e!

  7. Trying to find the right laminate is impossible, don't get confused though with formica as it is just a brand there are lots of laminate companies and suppliers out there. if you can or have the RAL colour that will save time. goodluck.

  8. Hi Geordie,
You're right there. Most boards are in 18mm also.
This makes for a lumpy uneven bed.

I suppose the difficulty matching makes owners start from scratch.
At the end of my road a complete interior was left out for the scrap man.
Tried to save it but I'd no room, and no mates wanted it. The rm122 fridge vents I could've used.

The alternative is to for a contrasting completely different colour. Urban camo style not quite my style...yet, though I did consider vynil wrapping birch ply. Or colour matched paint and acrylic lacquer/clear over it also.

The boards get damaged at the back because the bed mech. wears and it rides under the angle iron skid if not watched carefully when unfolded. Adding a longer skid fixes that.
The original B E I G E board must have been cheap, easily available and made by the million.
Hard to believe it's not got a modern equivalent.......
If found owners could share out the offcuts, so 8x4ft 'harrods' price easier to cope with.

  9. I tried around the traders at Stanford hall.
No one's doing that yet (once I don't need it - then they will).
There's no 100% match, but I'm getting closer. It will either be 'shed made' as flakey says, or thicker than 8mm ready made factory board. Not sure if I laminate 6mm ply to make 8mm how much warping there would be anyways, then there's no edging that size.
Devon just stuck brown paint on originally.
Ps don't bother asking desktop makers/laminators. They aren't interested in making one 8x4 board and will give you the Go Away Price.

  10. Campershaq did me new tops for my 79 moonraker, they matched both colours perfect

  11. Cheers lord congi.
    Will look into that.
If I laminate onto ply it will mean very smelly glue (I think it said to avoid smelling it on grange hill, downward life spiral etc).

  12. As an aside, for all you interior home builders (you hard workers !) noticed that wickes in their bathroom range have a laminate on plywood. Ok it's one sided, and more than a fiver to buy.
But it's ok in a shower unit (so pretty tough) and in small sheets, to get into a van, with modern nice finishes. And you don't have to buy three sheets minimum quantity like other places.
I don't work there, but if companies are polite and don't tell me rude words about where to go, then.......

  13. After companies who clearly didn't want any business gave me some extortionate ,'go away in short jerky movements' prices I thought same to you.
The rocknroll back seat boards I made in ply. These were padded in 3mm foam. Then alcantara beige (not just any cloth, M&S) cloth was stapled/glued at the back where the frame hides it. Saving-£500+.
The bed cushions don't slide down in the night , leaving gaps, when you use the bed , as the material grips it better.
If someone decided to make the correct matching board at a realistic price it can be removed and put back to stock, but it's under foam cushions and who can see...
