France Holiday Trip Planning.....................................................help

  1. Hello All,

Looking at a ferry crossing from Plymouth to Roscoff, a 8 hour drive down to Royan, stay at a Yelloh site called Cote Sauvage for a couple of nights, then another 4 hour drive onto another Yelloh site Ilbarritz for 10 days, then back up in one hit for a late crossing back to Plymouth.

Any recommendations, confidence boosters, reality checks and tips?

Never done a long trip like this in any vehicle let alone a nearly 40 year old 1600 bay.

What can i expect MPG wise as i've never worked it out.

Moonraker double top, me, mrs, 2 kids 6 and 4.

    Cheers all :)

Brave man . Should be fine in a 1600, I should set off now though.

We drove back from southern Spain in a Bay. I think it was 2 litre. It was fine. That was when exchange rates meant petrol cheaper tho. I reckon it was 20-25 mpg. We usually reckon it's about £450 to do the journey in a T4. That's fuel, tolls, campsites, crossing from Dover etc. @lost-en-france may have more idea :)

    The above was 1500 miles

  7. tbh if i was doing a trip like that the last thing on my mind would be mpg - if my bus got me there and back without issue i'd be very happy. do some long trips over here before you go - better to find a problem now rather than when you're abroad with kids in the van etc. take some spares - condenser, points etc.

    You'll be fine.
We've driven across france down to Devon twice 1000miles one way...no problems.
Be sure to give your bus a lil service, valves, fresh oil.
    Enjoy the trip.
    The bus will love it

  11. yes mate full service before.

could do it in my t5, which is racked for my tools, but the racking would come in handy for all our kit, but whats the point in having the bay?

    £800 ferry?? Blimey!
I got about 28mpg over about 1500 miles around France in my old 1600. The roads are superb compared to ours, so it's pretty much running at best economy all the time. Theres none of this constant stopping and starting in traffic etc.

That was one way when we lived in Spain. Drove back last October I. The T4 and was similar price. The ferry from Dover to Calais is cheaper. Also we didn't travel in the high season so ferry/tunnel cheaper.
I've just remembered that when we did it in The T2 we got the ferry from st Malo to make for less mileage.
Maybe it's only the T4 at £450.. That was price it generally worked out at. We lived in Spain 6 yrs so travelled back and forth quite often, rap as I don't like flying.

Ah, I was only going to question the choice of crossing but as you live there it makes sense

  15. we used to drive from Camborne ,we went to la tremblade ,which is 20 minutes from Royan ,sorry never once thought of fuel consumption...:D

we are 40 minutes from Royan ,when you get to La Rochelle take the green roads (non motorway) they are just as fast and you get to pass very nice senery (if your not sick of it by then)...

nb supermarkets are getting rid of the person in the kiost and replacing them with a machine ,the machine takes money ,then you get a ticket with a code ,then you choose petrol ,and then it gives you the exact amount..

you could buy a boat for that ,we used to get an out of season booking which included the ferry ,it was a Haven prison camp ,but we got to lose the kids...:D

pm me and I will give you my phone number (the right one) @Merlin Cat :D

  17. Don't do it!
It'll take twice as long as you expect, you will be totally exhausted by the time you return home.
You'll need another holiday to get over it and you will never ever do it again.
    Ask me how I know.
    27mpg.
