My 1970 bug

  1. Managed to get the headlight bucket welded in and the welds ground down this afternoon but when i opened my tin of filler it was all dried up and unusable.

  2. Still trying to decide on the colour to paint it.
    Down to 4 possible choices:
    RAL.jpg

The RAL 6033 Turquoise Mint is just edging ahead at the moment.

  3. ral paint has brilliant coverage

  4. Yeah, theres a reason its called brilliant orange though, and i don't fancy having to drive wearing sunglasses all the time. :p

  5. Been sanding stuff again today.
Got one of the wings reasonably straight enough for primer.

One of the back wings feels like a bag of walnuts when you run your hand over it. :(
    [IMG]

Its been badly dented, roughly hammered out again and filled at some point. I never noticed when i bought it.

Atleast the rear light housing fits the bolt holes though. :)

  6. Gonna try and get the wings, rear valance and bonnet primed on saturday, plus the areas i've used stopper on and resanded another couple of coats of primer.

Still not 100% decided on the colour as they look different from the online swatches to the actual colour.

  7. Whacked the heater on in the garage this morning to warm it up a bit before i started painting this afternoon.
    Got the bonnet primed:

    Removable rear valance:

Not enough room in the garage to do more than a few panels at a time though. :(

Area under the rear window was reprimed after using stopper to fill some small pin holes.

I also got the removable small parts primed, though i probably ended up with more paint on my hands that the parts. :p

Its never gonna end up with a show worthy paintjob but it'll all be one colour for the first time in years.
Decided RAL 6033 Mint Turquoise is gonna be the colour after finding this piccy of a late bug in a similar shade. :)

  10. I think it'll make a bit of a change from the Elm Green it was from the factory. Still has a nice retro feel to it though. :)

Masked up all the arches ready for some Gravitex overpaintable stone chip tomorrow.

Masked the spare wheel well ready for some gravitex too to add a little more protection from the spare wheel rubbing the paint off.

Made a start on the rest of the shell too. Sprayed a black guide coat on ready for some sanding with 600 grit.

Wing, bonnet, engine lid and rear valance got some too.

Should have known not to just key the paint it was painted in when i was given it and to take it back to bare metal instead.

Finish doesn't look too bad. Bit like the underside of a golf or T25.

Yet another Marmitety condition wing.

  14. Spent the afternoon wet sanding the primer with 600 grit. My hands ache like crazy now. :(
Got most of the interior sanded, just the dashboard, under dash and A pillars to do.
Might give the engine bay a quick going over before the topcoat but its virtually all hidden by the tarboard anyway so it seems a bit of a waste of time.

  16. I think another litre might be enough to give the inside of all 4 wings a couple of coats.

Was the Nova you owned a red one built by Dave Whipp or is it someone else i'm thinking of?
