Fitting heater cables

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Molteni Mike, Sep 29, 2016.

  1. Decided not to do any bodywork today as it was threatening rain.

Instead, thought I'd look at the long-since broken heater cables with a view to replacing them. The replacements have both an inner cable and outer casing, rather like a pedal cycle brake cable. Fitting them to the lever under the dashboard seems easy enough, as does the adjustable connection at the exchanger end.

But I sort of gave up at the point where the "outer casing" disappears behind the kick panel.

Is replacing the cable simply a matter of pushing the cable/casing through a channel from the cab floor and it miraculously appearing out of the tube near the heat exchanger?

I'm hoping it's as simple as above, not wanting to be scrambling around under the vehicle any more than I have to!

It's a standard 1600 system by the way. Thanks in advance, guys

  2. Remove the kick panel and the belly pan underneath and all will be clear.

In theory it should be a simple job, but, you ideally need to remove the broken cables which most likely are trapped inside the pair of conduits that run under the van - they might just pull out if you are lucky, or they'll break down and the outer sheathing will unwind themselves as they're effectively a spiral wound wire.

Doing mine was like a long tug of war match with the van!

The alternative solution is to zip tie the new cables to the outside of the conduits.
