JK Stainless single quiet pack

  1. Sorry for the delay in reporting back, all fitted now.

So as far as fitment went, it needed a little encouragement to get one of the carburettor preheat pipes to line up but it wasn't as bad as I'd anticipated to be honest. I did need to re-use 4 of the 10mm nuts due to the standard exhausts carb heat pipes having a tread in the exhaust flanges, the new manifold needs nut a blots, again not a huge problem but would have thought jk would know this and include a few extra nuts.
The biggest issue however is the manifold clearance to the engine support bar, or rather the lack of it, the manifold pipes are touching on the webs that are welded onto the engine bar where it has the plate attached to the engine. I'll try to add a picture after to show what I mean. So the plan now will be to drop the engine bar rather than take the exhaust off again, then gently nibble some of the Web away with a grinder, hopefully this should give a small clearance.

As for sound, I've not took it out for a drive yet but on running on the driveway it certainly does have deeper tone than the standard exhaust, I'm liking it so far so hoping it's not to intrusive on a long journey.

The look on the van is great, so all in all I'm impressed with it so far anyway.

Another point if anyone is interested is I've just received the towbar bundle from jk, they advertise it as only for stock exhaust so I was worried it was going to need major modification with the quiet pack exhaust. This isn't looking like it's going to be a problem at all though as I've dropped the bumper tonight and offered the towbar up into place and it looks like it's all going to have plenty of clearance the only part I'm not keen on is is saying to drill 2 holes into the rear valance into the engine bay area to put a couple bolts in, I'm not thinking this is load bearing structure so am planning to remove that part of the towbar bracket and just stick with 6 bolts up into the chassis, it's only a tinny trailer in going to use so should suffice.

  2. Thanks very much ScottandSusan for your detailed description and everyone else who has given me what information they could. It is much appreciated.
Although the stainless unit might not be perfect regarding noise and fitment, it sounds like it will still be a good overall exhaust for most applications. I think I'll order one of these as it sounds like the best option for me. Thanks

  3. Towbar now fitted along with the stainless quiet pack exhaust, and I can confirm it did indeed fit without any need for big modification, the only thing I had to do was enlarge the holes just very slightly on the chassis connection plate of the towbar and fit penny washers as the holes weren't quite in the right place, but no issues what so ever despite jk saying it only fits with standard exhausts.

If anyone is interested in doing the same and would like some photos just ask and I'll send you some.

  4. Hi mark, yes dead thread I know (not any other relevant).
How big did you go to with the solex jets?
We're they too small anyway for a stock bus (vw era of too lean, first emissions scandal).
    Thanks.

  5. Late reply but I only saw it now.
I honestly cant remember how big I went but they were a lot bigger. Initially I bought a few sizes bigger than standard and they were no where near big enough. When I got it jetted right the difference in how it ran was huge. That said, I did have a bigger cam and ported heads etc. Get one of those wideband meters that you clamp into the exhaust. Takes all the guesswork out
