12.04.2016 Took delivery of some goodies, but made a booboo - ordered 8mm engine studs, but should of ordered 10mm Was hoping to start rebuilding the engine but will have to wait a bit now! ==================================================================== 14.04.2016 Got the closing panel for the nearside rear tub, so prepared it then tacked in: Then fabricated a bit to go between the splash guard and the inside of the tub: Plus, a cheeky pic of the van ====================================================================== 17.04.2016 Closed off the offside tub repair : Started to grind back the welds and will then treat with anti-rust stuff and a bit of filler and what-not. These are the last of the repairs (welding wise) to be done at the rear - just need to remove the remainder of the underseal!
25.04.2016 Struggled to get the brake drum off of the hub but got their in the end Bit disappointed with the backing plate as was hoping it was salvagable but was foobared where it was touching the hub - never mind.... 26.04.2016 Got the stub axle out of the hub and got it cleaned up! What's left of the hub: This is the axle with some anti rust stuff splashed on - tomorrow I will tickle some paint on it then the rebuild can commence
27.04.2016 Put a coat of paint on the new axle so while that is drying started building the hub. Heres what I started with. Inner bearing installed: Circlip in: Grease seal now in : Outer bearing, spacer and grease seal installed: Axle in: One down, one to go - might be Friday when I get the other side done.
28.04.2016 Other side done Inside bearing and seal: Outside bearing, seal and started to push the axle through: The pair together: Started to assemble the drive shafts: That will be it for a few days as I will need the boot clips
30.04.2016 Finished off the drive shafts New piston rings installed - will give this pair another cleaning: Bling!! First pair installed. Adjustable pushrod tubes ready and waiting: But - wanted to fit the head, but I forgot it had a stuck exhaust stud so thought I would remove this first. Welded a nut to it: And.... the nut came off Welded 3 more nuts and all came off. So got a larger nut and welded this on - but it broke off more stud. Will have to get it drilled out I think
06.05.2016 Continued to tidy up the rear inner arch tub area and the nearside is almost complete - here it is with some red primer on: Started on the offside rear tub, this is the rear section with red primer on:
07.05.2016 Today I sprayed top coat in the near side arch tub: Proceeded to put more of the engine together so put the piston in on the right side: Started to add the studs and barrels: Then the head: Both sides on: Will be taking the heads off as both have exhaust studs stuck and going to have them removed next week. Also, noticed that the pistons don't travel too well whn cranking over so will double check everything Hopefully get more engine work done tomorrow
08.05.2016 Seem to be jumping around from one area to the next - DOH!! Started on the fuel tank - in good nick, just a little surface rust. Before: After removing all the loose rust and dust, covered it in rust prevention stuff: Just needs a coat of paint and a new fuel filter/feeder and then will start to think about putting it back in the van
11.05.2016 First coat of paint in the area where the fuel tank goes: First coat of paint on the petrol tank: Final coat of paint in the fuel tank area: (Getting dark outside so not very good pics...) Final coats applied on the fuel tank - should get all the fixings to re-install delivered tomorrow What do peeps use to replace the horse hair stuff that went between the fuel tank and the ledge??
I used this stuff, easy to apply and does the job http://www.screwfix.com/p/stormguard-extra-thick-weatherstrip-brown-7m/29498
20.05.2016 Started to put the engine together. Pushed the oil pump housing into place, with the gasket behind: Fitted the barrels, heads, pushrod tubes and pushrods and finally the rocker assembly: Not exciting to look at but still moving forward. Need to sort out the rocker covers out and get some of the metal work sand blasted then start to put the rest together. If the weather bucks up next week, will try to get the fuel tank fitted.
28.05.2016 Put the foam pads on to the tank ready to fit back in: Before: During/after: Was going to fit it today, but couldn't find the earth strap for the tank sender.....
