Have you managed to finally master something after years of trying. My kombi is being restored and I have been driving a lovely little Suzuki Swift....with power steering.I can pull into parks I would drive past in the kombi. I have got back into swimming. When I was a kid I was only taught to breathe on the right hand side in freestyle.Anyway I have now mastered bilateral breathing. It was a really weird feeling too...I could analyse what I was doing on my right hand side but it was a tremendous struggle to make my left hand side obey what I wanted it to do. Fresh from this success I am contemplating learning how to do a reverse parallel park as I have never done one in my life.... So what new skill do you want to master?Keep it clean.
I could hear the Ozzie accent in that post for some odd reason. I had flying lessons for a while in my early 40's. I wouldn't mind having another try at that!
Instructor makes it look so easy.I learnt many years ago to keep a wide berth from any thing without brakes..ie skiing.skateboards.roller skates.horses.
i got back to swimming last year and after a bit bilateral breathing comes natually and you don't have to think about it... I feel more creative this year ...
Lock picking. I bought a set of lock picks and a couple of padlocks to practice on a few months ago. I keep them in my van and every now and then I'll sit and have a go, I know the theory but haven't had any success so far.
I've fitted many locks and watched a few you tube vids on picking, Managed to open a padlock...but it's a fiddly thing to do..
In an attempt to get fit and lose weight I'm contemplating starting swimming. At the moment the pros outweigh the cons tho! Pros Good excercise May lose weight Cons Need to buy a new costume I'm useless at swimming I don't like getting my face wet I need to buy an extra large swimming cap to fit dreads in I don't want to stress my bad arm and shoulder I don't like cold water I'd feel obliged to shave my legs Apart from that I'm all for it
Merlin...suss out a 25m heated pool close to home.I recommend Speedo ladies togs...you can't go wrong with them.Swim caps I can't help you with as they only come in one size.Re your bad shoulder...perhaps try starting out doing a gentle breastroke or lifesaving backstroke. Then build up if you have no pain in shoulder.I had a shoulder recon a few years ago and I used to do just physio exercises in the shallow end..has to be a heated pool though or its agony.
I figured if I actually get myself to go I may buy a float and start initially with just kicking. Not sure how it would work. Apparently there's a pool a friend goes to that they have 50 and over sessions first thing where the pool is hotter hurrah, I knew there would be advantages to hitting 50
I can bilateral breathe, but I wouldn't say I've mastered it yet. I think that's down to not going to the pool regularly. We have a 33m pool not far away which is good for lane swimming, I just need to make time to go. Looking forward to open water swimming too when the weather warms up. Our 6 yr daughter has started swimming lessons again. First time around was in a group of about 12 kids in the pool with parent and the instructor at the side. You could never really hear what he was saying. Now she goes to a smaller private pool where the instructor is in the water with the kids, and it's 4 kids per class, much better. For me swimming is one of the most important skills you can have
Mrs Monkey used to use Heeley Baths when we lived local. Not too far away from you & she said there was a relaxed atmosphere there. Few years ago mind!
Mrs has just signed up for the Windermere swim in June. Shes on a big learning curve for that as only just started open water stuff. Plus, struggling with a rotator cuff issue but hats off to her! Accommodation booked and entry paid for!
Brilliant! Good on her. I have done it the last 3 years, 1 mile then 2 mile twice. My sister in law is doing the 10k this year! It's a great atmosphere up there. Which one is she doing? And has she got her wet suit yet? Has she found somewhere where she can practice her open water swimming too? I'm not signed up this year, think I may have missed the chance, plus can't afford the entry at the mo .
On a similar aquatic theme, the Mrs. and I have just started learning to scuba dive. There is SO MUCH STUFF TO BUY! Favourite so far has been the mask, an "Atomic Beaver" which was definitely not chosen because I love Leslie Neilsen...
