  2. I was trying to avoid all the pullers, hammer clapping etc by replacing both the steering box and the drag link arm?
I'm guessing I can't get both of these out without separating?

  3. Yes it will come out with the arm still attatched

  4. Nice one. Just checking, don't want to start then realise I'm up the creek!

  5. It's only four bolts (to use a well-worn phrase)!

  6. Never heard that one...:D
    Nice one.

  7. In this case it doesn't matter - the late box was introduced in August '72.

It is fiddly pulling the arm off underneath but you can get a lot of torque on the puller nut. I used an 18 inch breaker bar on mine and pulled hard on the bar. But as advised I only undid the nut on the arm a couple of turns so all that happened when it exploded off was the puller fell down.

  9. Anyone got a quick breakdown / list on what I need to do to swap the box over?

  10. Follow your nose ;) Out with the old, in with the new...

  12. image.png Separate steering colum from the steering box by removing the nut and bolt wear the colum meets the steering box peg.
Remove the nut on the draglink to pitman arm you can use a ball joints separated or shock it with a hammer.
Remove the 4 bolts holding the box to the chassis the pitman arm will pass through the hole and then follow the same steps in reverse to fit the new one.
Removing the pitman arm can be a bit tricky I bought a pitman arm splitter as my 3 legged puller kept jumping off.
    Good luck hope this helps

  13. Yes that does help, thanks very much.

  14. Do I have to undo the steering column or switches? Not sure if that's for an earlybay or not.
    Cheers

  15. I took my steering colum out but that was only because i was replacing the cab floor as part of my resto, but think if you get under the bus and look at the steering box peg there's a not and bolt holding the colum to the box.
Think ounces that's out it should drop away don't think there would be any need to remove any switch gear or elecs,
You could remove the little round cover at the base of the steering colum just so you could see what's what.

  16. Get under there, and all will be obvious ;)

  17. Nice one

  18. Halfway through removal but light stopped play. Has anyone actually removed the steering box with the pitman arm still attached themselves?
The hole looks a bit small and everyone on the other site (latebay broke yesterday) says that the pitman arm must be removed???
    Thanks
