Battlefield Tour: Looking for advice/recommendations

Discussion in 'Europe' started by gazcbm, Jan 14, 2016.

  1. Hi All,

When the camper is up and running this year I am looking to hit the WW1 & WW2 sites across Belgium and Northern France. Of course I would like to visit all the obvious ones, Normandy, Dunkirk, Ypres, Somme etc but I would like to throw in some sites off the regular beaten track and I would like a mix of wild & paid for camping along the way.

Anyone done anything like this or can offer up any suggestions? I will be reading other threads in this section as well making notes along the way and hopefully end up with a great plan for my first trip out of the uk with the bus.

    Cheers

Yep, the Ypres Salient is a well signposted tour around some of the most horrendous battle sites & corresponding cemeteries of WW1.
We went in the bus on our last big travels in Chip & pics are in the corresponding thread.
It's well worth following the route for which you can pick up maps and directions to the main features from the war museum in the centre of Ypres.

Stay at the aire at Hondschoote for safe free over night stops & a local Lidl nearby. It's about 3/4 of an hour away & good if you'd rather spend the campsite euros on vino.

The year before we went & did the Normandy beaches. The US cemetery is amazing. This time we stayed in an aire on the cliffs & then in a local campsite at Juno beach.
Buy 'All the Aires in France' guide for free camping.

  3. well worth seeing the Bayeux tapestry if you're in that neck of the woods....also the Lochnagar crater, near La Boisselle....and the Somme in full bloom is incredibly moving

  5. Great thanks all! I'll be back in front of a computer tomorrow and will have a proper look through your recommendations

  6. We went to that there France and turned right to drive along the west coast,
The defences, the poppy fields and the graveyards just go on and on and on and on.
    And on.
I am a very miserable old sod of a bloke who lacks compassion or empathy towards almost anyone in any situation,
but I was seriously and unexpectedly moved by this unexpected (forgotten) site/sight.
