Well it is aircooled, quite old, extremly well maintained and technically not all mine. In truth we all own it. Anyone guessed yet?? Actually there are 2 of them and they live just down the lane from my place and I write a few technical notes for the website. OK so its not a VW actually it is one of these; Yes it is one of a pair of the Royal Navy's historic Fairey Swordfish aircraft operated by the RN Historic Flight at RNAS Yeovilton. More information for the 'spotters' here: http://www.fnht.co.uk/engineering-update-september-15.html
As the 9 cylinder attracted (thanks Terrordale for aero ident and MorkC68 for the later history) a bit of attention I thought I would offer a couple of photos of my last resto with 2 air cooled cylinders: Not much of a guessing game as the name is visible but which model? there is a clue at the top front of the engine.. The finished project: Its a Convert; quite unusual for 2 wheels, 950cc V twin drives a Sachs torque convertor, drives a 2 speed manual box via a dry multiplate clutch and finally shaft drive to the bevel box in the hub. Full story here: https://sites.google.com/site/motoguzziv1000convert/ P.S. I hope someone finds this stuff interesting and that I am not just cluttering TLB server ........you might have guessed I have just learnt, you need 50 posts to get the Air Cooled 10% price reductions!!
I love obscure aircooled motors like this twin turbocharged v12 from tatra: or the aircooled diesels Deutz make.
I like your BMW Terrordale, no chance of banging your knees on the valve covers! Thanks for the phot of pristine Tatra motor Zebedee last one I saw V8 possibly was very oily leaked everywhere, but at least followed (pun intended) VW as 'twas in the boot.
Thanks Matty, Love those U Tube clips and the associated one showing the machining of the 7 cylinder. With a bit of skill on the throttle I bet you could run the Fairbanks to music! Now I promise the next photo will be my last on this thread. Having done air cooled x 2, 7 and 9 cyl how about 18 This a Bristol Centaurus sleeve valve radial (53.6 lt) fitted to a single seat Sea Fury at the RN Historic Flight, some may remember the flights 2 seat had an engine failure last year and made an emergency landing at Culdrose Air Day. Fortunately the pilot was unhurt and the airframe is being restored, but the cause of the engine failure is still being determined. This one is currently inhibited and with plugs removed and plug leads bagged and taped between the cylinders. It will be de-inhibited and flashed up for a ground run in a week or so then put back to bed until we get a clearance to fly again.
Ive just had a read of the link you posted, very interesting website, cheers for posting it up! My better half was in the Fleet Air Arm in Yeovilton - she was part of the weather team there - she moved from Culdrose before moving on to Northwood, again in the Fleet Air Arm!
Thanks Mork, I was an ATCO serving at Cu and Vl between 77 and 87 so we might have been in the same tower at some time.
