Front seats seized solid.Please HELP!!!!!!!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ianlea73, Oct 4, 2015.

  1. I've tried & failed to remove the seats on my bus.
I have used WD40 & cleaned the runners with compressed air .
I have managed to get the adjuster on the seat to move & it now lifts out of the welded on seat runner.
However the seats will not budge forwards or backwards at all even with my weight on them.
I have even used a block of wood & my large hammer but to no avail.
    Am I missing something?
Is there a bracket or a tab that locks the seat on the rail?
    This is my seats.[IMG]

  2. How far out will they come? Once they're moving, there is a small safety catch on the driver's side that stops the seat flying off completely. May just need a good belting, tho'.

  3. They are both seized on the runners completely. I have no movement at all.
I'm going to use a propane gun & try & heat them tomorrow.

  4. If you've got no bulkheads, can you not drift them off from the rear, or have you tried that?

Wire brush the runners as much as you can, WD40 and leave it 24hrs. Get someone to help, get the sat on the seat holding the release lever( is it lifting out of both sides of the runners?)

Whilst your assistant holds the lever when sat on the seat whilst they try shuffling the seat hit the back of the seat with a hammer and a block of wood, I wouldn't use a flame as the seats will go up in flames very easily

  6. try sitting on it and jerking back and forwards holding release lever , just keep wiggling sounds daft but its how you get a tooth out , soak in anti seize over night . i wouldnt use heat either . You are sure theirs nothing else holding them on yeh .

  7. Tried that chap.

Ye probably not a great idea I know.
I'm back up the unit tomorrow so I'll clean & prep again.

I've tried that too mate & I weigh 14 stone so should have moved a little bit at least.
I don't think anything else is restricting the seats but I'll double check tomorrow.

Hit it harder, my early ones were rusted in place, I used a steel drift and lump hammer.

Old trick. Heat up some oil in a small saucepan with a pouring lip. get it bubbling and pour it straight onto the seized area. It may be difficult to get directly at the runners. you may have to rig something up. when you have poured the boiling oil in leave it a minute and bash it hard again.

  10. Having the same issue w/ my passenger side. Hammered, pb blasted it, jerked back and forth. It feels like it nudges bit but still doesn't go!

  11. I had this issue and found that someone had spot welded the seats in place

  12. might be a idea to look under to see if the levers are working...

Might be an obvious one - but you are pulling the lever to the side aren't you?
It's just that you said you'd got the adjuster to move - you weren't on about the back adjuster were you?

Don't want to sound condescending ;)

  14. I used a large nail bar barced off the bulkhead and b port to get mine shifting as one was rusted in place. Good luck

This is definitely worth investigating, someone has buggered about with yours - the lack of bulkheads indicates that it had swivelling seats at some point but now has not. So someone has removed the swivel bases and (hopefully) fitted runners, but may have just welded the seats in as LCC suggests.

  16. I watched the mechanism on mine and its weird how one seat lever I have to pull up and the other I have to push down to release the seat. Found it to be pretty damn weird! It doesn't feel welded> Do your guys seat levers pull in the same direction or different?

  17. Had a few hours at the unit this afternoon & I have Good news......The seats are out.
I used an oil can with a long flexible spout & covered the runners in fresh oil.I left them for an hour & used compressed air to clean up the area.
I then used a big hammer & a long metal bar & beat the crap out of the back of the seat until it began to move. After an hour both seats were out.

Thanks for all the above help I really appreciate it.

  18. If you haven't taken them out ever check for spot welds on the runners, they may be tacked on! OK! Should have kept reading! ;)
