Now then as some of you know I had a bit of a moment with petrol this week, which means the engine is coming out to replace the filler pipes to the tank... So in the interest of people who may be in the same position as myself and are on the cusp of dropping their Type 1 engine for the first time, I thought I would post how I get on throughout the weekend.. Equally for those of you who have done it before... a giggle and possibly provide me a helping hand going - you need to do this! Lord knows where this is going to go, or the emotional rollercoaster its going to be... but I will share as much of it here...it will probably be more the emotion rather than the technical "how to do pull it like a pro" posts but lets see how it goes! So with all jobs I have read on here, there has to be a reason IT MUST WORK, and failure is not an option...I have one of these... The bus is booked in on Monday for its bodywork to be sorted, so we have a timeline... so will keep job focus ticking a long... 48 Hours to Go Jobs left to do (with thanks to @snotty) Engine out Batter neg off Unplug coil +ve supply, disconnect alt light output & main output, reversing light cable. Looms out of the way. Sealing foam out, remove rear tinware piece for convenience. Under van, disconnect heater cables (may be rusted on), disconnect concertina tubes. Clamp fuel line, drain tank by sufficient quantity Support engine with jack Undo THE four bolts Undo backbar bolts. Grab jack handle, grip engine and yank towards you, then lower. Remove Fire wall Inspect all parts of the fuel set-up Replace hoses (on tank) Reconfigure / relocate fuel filter & lines on engine Re-fit firewall Re-fit the engine Run the bus Will post pictures / updates / questions / thoughts / emotions / as time permits
I have faith.....didnt find getting it out too bad tbh....getting it back in was fiddly but I think youll make your deadline
Post 1 - Preparation So far I have read as much literature that I can be it manuals, posts, articles...and ask and checked on TLB with other members... so feel up for it... Plan is doing a lot of the prep on my own, so nobody is standing around and also letting me concentrate on what is coming off and from where..Later today a mate is coming over to help me pull the engine out... so hopefully that will work.. he is then going to be my glamorous assistant for the afternoon... Goal for today is engine out, fuel lines done... Time left - 48hrs Job to do - 100% Well being - High Confidence - Medium

I will follow your thread closely and flag it for future use as, whilst I don't currently need to drop my type 1, I am sure a time will come As you are only trying to access firewall/tank, I presume you are dropping engine with gearbox attached, enough to work over the top, or is this not possible? the box stays there as do all driveshafts etc the "4 bolts" are actually the ones splitting box/engine this is the quickest option - and lighter.
You should be able to doit in a day easily as long as you have the bits let me know if you need pipe size as if iv just replaced all my tank pipes il get pic later for you if you want
Just a thought ...... What's it going to body shop for.....welding?? No chance engine will be coming out there??
All this activity is seriously going to lower your chances being at the front door to "catch" a caller

Sadly not @volkswombat its having the seals done and the rust around the windows...basically a catch the bits before they go really bad session

I was about to say the same And don't forget the throttle cable! Also, when you put the engine back in, you might find it helps to wrap some tape round the D bolt that holds the top of the starter motor so that it sticks in its hole. It stops you pushing the bolt back through when you try to put the nut on. You'll know what I mean when it happens
