Alternative fuel hose? Fuel pipe research

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by OrangeVW, Jun 8, 2014.

  1. 1/4" is too big. 6mm is just about ok if you clamp it up well.

  2. Anyone used this? I've just bought some from Machine 7.

  3. The line in the photo has the same stamp marks as the one I fitted last year. I have doubts its gates line.

I use SAE J30R9 fuel injection hose from Advanced Fluid Solutions, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with the hose from Machine 7, and if it’s SAE J30R9 it ‘should’ be suitable for E10 fuel.

This has some useful facts and information concerning hose sizes (and hose clips) – don’t use 6mm hose on 6mm pipe. http://www.volksbolts.com/faq/fuelhose.htm

  5. For info, here's the Gates stuff I bought off the reel at a local motor factor. Says 6mm, but in fact it's slightly less internally. Has a strange sticky texture, but it's lasted so far...

<edit> Looked up the part number and it's R7, which should be ok for E5 (it says). No probs so far.

Here is the line I fitted last year

  8. Hmmm, not nice. Must check mine again...

  9. The stuff I bought from flexiducting is not gates, the rep got back to me today.

The gates Barricade part number for 8mm is 27348 but it does not have a 5.6mm or 6mm version so he said.

  10. Hey all,

Sorry for the necropost but reading this thread and the ratwell page has me even more confused!?

It looks to me that for my 76 FI bus I need to get 7mm R9 fuel line for the tank, fuel rails, injectors, regulator and then a small piece of 10mm R9 line from the fuel filter to the fuel pump??

Am I correct? Where the hell do I get 7mm hose from??

    Thanks in advance

  11. We now offer a new hose from Goodridge which they have said is the best on the market,

    Single Carb Kit:

    Twin Carb Kit:

    https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/AC1...-goodridge/?crumbStartPage=2&crumbStartRow=14

We do proper stainless hose clamps:

    https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/N02...screw-type/?crumbStartPage=2&crumbStartRow=14

    The Hose itself:

    https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/N90099601BQ/fuel-hose-per-metre-bq-goodridge-5-5mm-cotton-braided/

    The Blurb:

The 210 Series hose made by Goodridge is a top quality Integral stainless steel reinforced synthetic rubber with fibre braided nitrile hose with a high abrasion resistance ideal for also using for fuel, breather, oil or water hose. Being Nitrile rubber it is also fully compatible with modern E10 fuels, (Petrol with 10% Bio-Ethanol) and being made by Goodridge you can be assured its top quality.

Goodridge say it is tested for 100% methanol so should last a good while.

We have been very keen to try and offer what we condier to be the best replacement hose we can and this is what we have come up with.

Oh they do a stainless overbraided one too for anyone that wants it:

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers

    Alex.

    Its a shame its over-braided.
Makes keeping an eye on the rubber itself hard.

  13. Yes I know what your saying and I did raise this with our chap at Goodridge but he assures me that they have this stuff in E85 powered vehicles with no grief at all. We have fitted it to some of our vehicles but only been on a few month's so cant give a timescale to longevity but our vehciles sit about a lot and dont get used so should show on ours before they do on anyone else's. Along with the fact goodridge are a trusted and well known manufacturer I am pretty confident in the hose offered.

  14. That was my thoughts too, hopefully being Goodridge it'll last well though.

I wouldn't use it just because of the over-braiding but that's just me. Its probably fine.
I'd rather see the state of the rubber having seen how well some of the other big manufacturers stuff lasts!

R9 is the minimum specification you should use; inspect it regularly and be prepared to renew it in two or three years. And it sounds like you are looking for the wrong size hose – it must be stretched over the fitting, so don’t for instance use a 7mm hose on a 7mm pipe.

It looks like VWH are selling hose kits with a specification suitable for E10; alternatively, kits are available from VW Aircooled Works in 100% bio fuel proof hose. http://www.vwaircooledworks.co.uk/

The description states ‘These are proper fuel hose clips and not just jubilee clips’
It is a myth that Jubilee worm drive clips are not 'proper' hose clips. Worm drive clips are recommended for hose connection in the marine environment and are at least as suitable for fuel hose as a nut and bolt clip.

  18. The worm is not ideal as often causes and abration on the hose so I would agree to disagree on that one!

  19. Its actually rated for methanol, nitromethane and for vehicle's with E85 so is the same if not better spec as the aircooledworks 100% bio proof kits but at a cheaper price.

  20. Taken from the goodridge site for the 200 series (stainless overbraid):

    http://www.goodridge.co.uk/200-series-braided-nitrile-hose&search=200

Goodridge 200 Series Braided Nitrile Hose is the premier stainless steel braided nitrile hose. Designed to Goodridge's extracting specifications and exclusively manufactured for Goodridge, this hose has been supplied to motorsport racing champions for many years.
This 200 series Hose is designed for use with a wide range of re-usable aluminium hose ends and provides essential protection and resistance to high pressure, temperature, vibration, fire risks and chafing. It is constructed of a seamless synthetic CPE inner with an integral stainless steel braid and a high tensile stainless steel outer braid. 200 Series hose has the highest corrosion and fire resistance threshold of any stainless braided nitrile hose available.
It can be used with all synthetic lubricants, fuels, oils, coolants and alcohols including methanol and nitromethane. This hose is perfectly manufactured for efficient and reliable use with 136, 1136, 236, 336 and 2776 Series Hose Ends. The traditional racing hose.
    Price is per metre.

    210 series, (cotton overbraid):

    http://www.goodridge.co.uk/210-series-hose?search=210

The Fibre Braid 210 Series Hose is a new development, based on the conventional 200 series stainless steel braided Nitrile hose, widely used in all forms of racing.
The 210 series has a lightweight fibre braid, with high abrasion resistance, and is ideal for breather hoses, or oil and water circuits. It is the perfect solution as a lightweight alternative to 200 series, where the robust stainless steel braid is not necessary, and weight saving is paramount.
    Price is per metre.
