Movement end float

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by charlene, Jan 27, 2015.

  1. Sorry I am a feet and inches boy - if its a few mm (ie hardly any movement) then its fine, but if we are talking more then its worth looking at. I need to be clearer in my junk replies! :):baggy:

  2. A few mm is far too much at a few mm the thrust bearing will be drastically moving in the case

    0.07 - 0.13 mm is vws tolerance

  3. Personally id leave sending it to the trimmers for now and put that money to one side
The engine strip down and re build could be quite costly
How long is left on the mot?

  4. Lets not get the poor girl worried :)

I'd just get an AA card and drive it.

If its taxed, insured and MOT'd then get out and go somewhere, everywhere, anywhere. Camp in it, smile and wave at people who will smile and wave at you.
When, and if, it breaks down get relayed back home and sort whatever broke.

Windscreen seal, again I wouldn't bother, as everyone else has said it's very rarely the seal much more likely to be rusted metal. Get yourself some sealant and squirt it under the rubber. It'll only last a few months but that gets you out camping for the summer.
Winter is the time to be planning big jobs and every little job on these things leads to something else that needs sorting.

the way i see it after being on here 4 years is this.
    2 types of owners
    1. buy van go all gung ho and try to make it "new" from the start - realise it costs a lot and never get it back/get fed up
    2. the clever ones.

  9. Me oh my confusing stuff! Lol... I think we will get the engine sorted ASAP as interior is liveable it's scruffy but fine ...I'm slightly nervous about the £1 k possible cost but at the end of the day we know the implications of owning one of these beauties - (grew up with a 69 Devon moonraker ) and know it'll be worth it ... But on the other hand didn't want to go all out and it would be better to sell Vera and start again !!! Cheers for the welcome guys ;-)

  10. Hi April the mot runs out ...

  11. How am i worrying her
They have allready been told by a restorer that the end float is out of spec
All i did is state the spec set by vw themselves
Anyone carrying on driving with a few mm of end float as you stated is ok is slowly hammering the case and crank to death
This will result in the final rebuild cost being much higher

take it for an mot and see if/what it fails on then go camping.
the most serious fault i see on your list is the oil light not working, check the bulb then the sender.

  14. Wise choice:thumbsup:
Then as ricky said put it in for a fresh mot and fix any fails
Enjoy it for the summer get to know it and fix any further problems as and when they arise

buy another one as i said earlier - waste of money doing up an unknown type 1 engine in my opinion

  17. Where do We buy one from???

tonight the 2 guys on forum who we rely on to talk sense @zed and @Paul Weeding both run businesses working on these old vans will tell you an honest opinion but please don't fall in the "believe everything the garage man tells me" pack, research on forum 1st as you are and go off recommendations some of us know a bit, and all garages just want your cash
