  1. I need to make a decision on my vw bay. its 1973 so on the cusp of high/low lights.

i am torn with keeping it as a true late bay but also like low light crossovers and custom indicators.

    what you think?

Keep it as it was manufactured, but if you must change then go for custom indicators

So at the moment you have a boggo high indicators front end, and are considering changing it to a low indicators one - but those indicators will not be the normal ones fitted to an early?

  7. Why not have them half way that would confuse a few and be different ?

  9. My van had indicators in the bumper before I changed it back, not a fan personally. The one advantage is that you have to cut holes in the deformation panel, so you get to see just how much of the metal has turned to rust.
Low lights look wrong IMHO unless you remove the deformation panel as well and mod or replace the inner valance. Plus you have to blank the high indicators. Loads of work. Personally, I'd keep it stock.

  12. Given a free reign I'd have them dead centre, one above the other,
but I'd have them triangular, shaped like arrows so you could see* which way you are indicating.

    Hope this helps.

    Your van, your choice.
I've never seen custom indicators that look good though.
If it was mine, I'd stay stock.

  15. Stay high in my opinion.

It's the most obvious recognition feature that says "I'm a Late Bay" is it not?

There are lots of bolt ons that you can use to give a distinctive front end that don't involve cutting extra holes in the front panel: Volkszombie bumpers or custom fresh air inlet grills.

Boringly, I think they moved them high for safety didn't they, easier to see and all that! There must be some logic in that I guess.

I'm probably paraphrasing, but I'm sure someone on TLB said "The Late Bay; because even Volkswagen don't always get it right first time"

Good luck whatever you choose, post pics please.

I have seen a bus with the highlights removed and BL Mini indicators fitted in their place. Reminded me of a darlek. There are far better choices to be had l am sure it's just that I've not seen anything.

  18. i thought this may spark controversy! answering: why? because i have the option too and i have to make a decision this week. the front has been put on and i have the panels for high/low/non.

thanks for all the comments. might just toss a coin :)

i like the completely smooth front look. no grille or indicators but i have to put the indicators somewhere.

  19. I used to really like the low lights, but for some reason I much prefer the lates to stay highlight or go custom, I'm not so much a fan of the crossovers. (No offense meant crossover folk!) I do love the rear ends on the earlys though..

  20. keep your options open: one high, one low.
