D.I.Y Electric power steering

  1. I
thought the same on this so I have actually welded up the ball coupler support so that it won't flex at all. The whole column on mine goes in as one solid piece as per the original. Do bear in mind though that the column is also supported by the two crews into the dash which will give it more strength than the tongue alone.

  2. Cant really see flex being a problem at the bottom when the whole thing attaches to a flexible coupler

  4. I used an "original" VW coupling and its still fine after a year or two. I wouldn't bother fitting an aftermarket coupling they distort very quickly anyway...rubbish quality and the suppliers must know it.

  5. Bit of an update, after reading the comments ive altered the bottom to a solid tube so that it is self supporting although i will still be putting a bracket onto the bulkhead, next step is to fit it and adjust the bottom tube to length, then make up the bracket and fit the whole thing

  6. Looking good. Mine is in but I have removed the control box, torque sensor and motor and with the whole lot connected in the garage it does..........
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I am going to have a job to fault find it I think because I don't know it worked when I bought it. I can test the motor easily enough I guess but not sure how to test the ecu and my speed control:(

  7. Prob be a while before i fit mine, do you want to borrow the bits?

  8. Excellent work, looking good. I'm watching this thread with interest as my back / shoulders are riddled with Arthritis and I'm conteplating doing something similar to help me manoeuvre my bus a little easier.

  9. That's a great offer thanks but I will see what I can test first and it will be a good while before my van is on the road so I have time to play. If I get stuck I will give you a shout.

So thats it fitted, now onto the wiring, the manual system has five wires, + & - and three to the ECU but the speedo transducer i have bought has + & - and one wire for the ECU?

  12. I would have thought the ecu would just be acting as a fancy relay? Surely just a switched relay would do the job? What's the function of the ecu?

  13. No it's rather more complicated than that. It changes assistance with relation to torque sensor and vehicle speed. A relay won't work. Mores the pity!

  14. Well after extended playing I got my power steering working. It would seem that you need to do exactly as it says in the instructions and connect the speed controller power feed separately to the ecu feed as they need a delay between them or it doesnt work. Because I was testing on the bench I was connecting all together and it did nothing. Now it works great so well happy. It also means that I can put a switch in between this cable and the ignition switch and so I have a failsafe mode of I need it.

  15. Looks pretty ok to me. The servo/motor is rotated under the dash, where the commercial ones are to the side.
Did you need to install a sensor on the gearbox ?

  16. The ECU is now fitted and the manual set up is temporarily hooked up

The roll of wire you can see is the speedo transducer recommended by Sailes
    https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/speedo-transducer-m18x1-5-sp-trans

    Ive spoken to this company
    http://www.extraefi.co.uk/CorsaPSA.html
and they have confirmed that there speed sensitive controller listed will work with any transducer that puts out between 5 and 12 volts so im awaiting a price, then i will hook up the box to my speedo transducer, the only drawback for me is that i wont be able to finish it until im able to drive up and down the road.

  17. Sorry to resurrect a 4 year old thread, but are the photos still available as they aren't clickable in the thread.

I've just bought a Corsa eps and am in the princess of fitting it but I need some pointers
