Big cheers to @Majorhangover for coming with me to day to look and take home my new toy. A Fiat X1/9 in metallic red. Always wanted one and this one I couldn't walk away from. It has its Fiat problem. The headlight winks when they retract. A piece of trim fell off in my hand and the carb has a fluffy moment. Oh well, it's a Fiat called Roberto.

Always wanted one as a child and now that the ragtops gone I can :)

And unlike my Golf auto, it didn't breakdown like that car did web I tried to view it. Don't mention the AA and the 4 hour wait.

  2. My cousin julie ,had one just the same , her dad kept it for years in his garage while she did her thing in other countries etc and in the end bought it off her to help her out financially and thought hed be a boy racer again at 70 odd init but he soon found it was too small for him and he put it in the garage again thinking it would go up in value but a trusty dealer talked him into selling it for pennys just a few years ago , cant remember the reg but ?? do they go for much these days?? Anyway suits you stu , so is that what replaced the raggy then;)

  3. Possibly the least reliable car on the planet.
I have massively fond memories of a holiday in Yarmouth in one of the when they were new.
Went with a mate (he was a Gayer too ) his one winked from new!

  4. Get the engine out and put a punto tubo in and see how many smiles that gives you

Had a mate who did this and omg what a car faf bordering on insain think he may still have it

I remember them having a reputation for rusting like a Brazilian - so this one must have done something right to still be around.

    Have fun

They are cheap which makes restoring one a matter of passion over anything else. This one was restored by its owner of 12 years 10 years ago. It's bang tidy. Needs a little underseal. A hit with the electrical stick and some new tyres. But overall I'm chuffed to bits. And I can actually fit in it.

Funny story, I had to take it back to the owner in the first 10 minuets because I couldn't get the gas cap off. Turns out you need to be manly

  8.

It certainly feels quick. On the way back I was doing a whopping 60mph but I could have sworn it was 120mph. It feels quick. It's also not as slow as I thought it would be.

And indeed I'm up for a TLB Fiat club

You mean like this (to disguise the rust)

But not as bad as this:

  14. One of the few cars I physically couldn't drive. I could JUST get in, but not actually move my legs onto the pedals. Shame, I like them, had a lot of 60s / 70s Fiats when I was younger. That engine works well with a K&N and ANSA exhaust then a run on a rolling road.

This guy raced X1/9s and had loads of wild mods. See the picture at the bottom of this page. Not sure if the business still exists, the guy who ran it died a few years ago.

This is a great book, a mixture of general workshop info, racing stories / reports, tuning information. Plenty of info on X1/9s as you will see from the cover shot. Just been and dug my copy out for a re-read.

    Cheers for the links.

There isn't a lot of space in there even for me but I can turn the wipers off and flash people with my knees.

I also find getting in and put easier than the companies MR2. I was some what not looking forward to my dream being shattered because of this. Phew.

He's also become a little flirty with the cheeky wink.

Dave has posted a link to it as my phone won't.
