Pop up roof guide?

Discussion in 'Buying a VW Camper' started by Wispy, Apr 5, 2013.

  1. Hi guys.

Is there a guide to the different roof types anywhere? I'm looking for whatever T2 I buy to have a roof big enough to sleep 2 adults ideally, and don't want to end up with something that's only good for extra headroom while I'm cooking!

    Cheers :)

  2. You'll be looking for a westy then fella I believe?

  4. The Viking or Super Viking pop tops are pretty substantial. My parents had a viking roof when I was about 12 or 13, it wasn't the most comfortable nights sleep but was OK for my parents and sister for a few nights.

  6. We have a Super Viking, three of us sleep in the roof and the dogs have the R&R bed - I am 6'5 and can stretch out in the SV roof - and we spent 3 weeks touring Europe last summer with no lack of comfort :)

  12. If you are looking at Westy you need a later rear hinge one as then you get a strong 7'6" double bed up top that easily copes with two adults. The front hinge ones are 5'6" upstairs which is too short for tall people. Photo of Myrtle looking very shiny last summer. We have also slept 3 kids up there pretty easily.

  13. At that height, I think you'll find you're actually stood behind a pillar!

  14. That helps a lot thanks Bertiebot/Myrtle. Frustratingly, I've not seen many in the flesh, so it's hard to judge what's good and what's not from various photos online. We're keeping an open mind to getting something cheep and adding/changing the roof for a new one, but we'd rather not have to go through the hassle if it can be avoided!

  15. With Vikings, remember that the standard has two hammocks that slot into brackets and the Super has pull-out beds.

The hammocks are rather narrow - not much more than the width of a normal bloke. So much so that I had a 3/4 width hammock made for when just one person wants to sleep up top. It just slots into the other hammock's bracket and is remarkably comfy.

  16. Would a Devon also do the job?
    (yes, I know I'm a dumb newbie)

  17. Your best bet is to go to a show and have a nosy around the various roof types

  18. Lord Congi has a Devon Moonraker (I think) - he'll be able to tell you . He's at spring camp at the mo where there's not much connection to the outside world!

  19. Definitely. Annoyingly life keeps throwing things in the way every time there's a local show on :(

  20. I think people tend to get attached to their roof choice (I know I do) so nothing beats having a look for yourself
