Hello ppl. After a day at volksworld today i couldn't help but notice the amount of different wheels people are running on there buses. Im looking to do somethin abit different on mine but as my bus has yet to have suspension fitted, never mind the wheels, im unsure how much room there is between the outter lip of a standard 14" steel wheel and the arch lip? If anyone has a moderately lowered bus still running on steel wheels i would appreciate it if you could reply with a few measurements?? Many thanks
Hi there, I've just lowered my bus at the back by 1 inner spline (would have been 1 outer but couldn't separate the torsion bar from the sprinng plate). It's dropped the back by 60mm and I can still get the standard 14" steel wheel with 185R14C tyre on and off. Any more than that and it wouldn't fit.
Cheers for the reply.how do people run a 7x17 on the rear if a bus? Im guessin that once the wheel is in there is plenty of room in the arch, its just getting it between the drum and arch lip when fitting and removing?
i have just been out and had a measure up of my stocks to inner rear arch lip - 28mm from arch to tyre and 38mm from wheel rim to inner lip of arch .
when i had empi's on my bus there was very little clearance less then 5mm but they never caught on the lip . mot man never liked it much though , passed it but was never keen to them so close to the lip
Cheers pop top. I saw a split at volksworld running banded steels on the rear and im looking to go down the same route. Just need to work out how much of a band i can get away with. Obviously I will be looking at running a smaller tyre than a 185r14
The offset on that wheel above is throwing the rear of the rim way back into the bus as well as out - nice wheels
I just think they looks cool especially with being able to keep the hub centres also I guess the only way to find out if they'll fit is to get the wheels banded and try them
Be aware if you have had the rear arches replaced the repro panels have a larger lip than the stock vw originals Paul weeding is trimming mine back a bit before he paints the bus so i dont have clearance issues with wider tyres
Malc the offset may well be stock but the band of steel welded into the wheels is whats pushing them out wider I agree they look very cool Also looking at that pic id say the arches have been trimmed aswell
stick to stock doodle , better handling better fuel consumption and you don't need arms like a hod carrier to turn the steering wheel
I've got repo arches on the rear but will be trimming them right back for plenty of clearance. I've always bought wheels and made the car fit them so mayb I should do the same again Was offered some 8x15 and 9x15's but they'll never fit in the arch
If i could get decent all terrain tyres in stock sizes i would malc but there not available This means ive got to go up to a minimum of 15 inch in wheel size and 205 in width
The EMPIs on my 4 inch lowered bus leave less than a fingers width between the tyre and the arch. 185/65 R15 tyres. And yes, I have pulled a muscle parking it.
