Hi guys, just bought our first ever air-cooled VW, an 82 (manufactured 79) late bay. huge amounts of work but we like challenges. I'm a very capable welder which is just as well! first job is roof off and bin it! new gutter supports etc.
Welcome. What's the story behind a '79 bay having an '82 plate? Was it not registered for 3 years after manufacture? Curious.
there was a time when an import got a plate based on the year it was imported, rather than the year it was made. bonkers idea and (obviously) open to abuse so was changed to the more logical approach of age related plates being assigned.
That explains why I occasionally see old imported Japanese motorcycles for sale specified as newer than reality.
Hello. it would be great to see your bus progressing. Can I be cheeky and ask if you would mind starting a thread in the Restorations section. We all love a bit of welding porn. good luck and welcome. There’s some really weird people on this forum but they are mostly harmless.
Hello and welcome! My friend’s neighbour also has a Y reg bus, RHD like yours, and with a similar looking pop top roof; maybe they just spent a couple of years in the back corner of a conversion company together, until a passing employee remembered about them and took a break from working on the ‘new’ T25s, to finally get them out on the road? Looks like you’ve got an adventure ahead; I’ll check in on the resto thread to watch progress.
Maybe! Im very intrigued by her mysterious beginnings. Im trying to identify the pop top. There are no markings on it that I can see.
