Hi all I’ve read an excellent post/thread on here which I think would answer my question but can’t for the life of me find it now! So basically, I’m trying to see some pics showing where to look for the M plate, what it SHOULD look like and where the chassis number is stamped (and again what it should look like) on either a late bay or (dare I say it here..) and earlier (pre-1973) bay. The thread I found previously showed how to decode the numbers so any assistance finding that post would be very much appreciated. Clearly I could Google this but I’m hoping the more knowledgable and friendly folks of TLB can help. Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
On a proper Late, riveted to the air duct under the dash on the LHS. Chassis number also stamped into the LH curved panel in the engine compartment.
Hello They can be behind front seat on upward panel or Kerbside on dash looking bottom right from outside Or to the left in vertical position bottom in engine bay staring you in the face at 7 o’clock
So, does anyone have a pic of their chassis plate they could share? One I’ve seen is in English, is this normal on an early 70’s bay or should it all be in German? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Why do you want a pic of someone else’s plate? Tell us what year your bus is supposed to be and we’ll help you find your plate. Or is it missing?
Reading my message back I see why you’d reply like that! Don’t worry, I’m not some sort of con artist cut and shut merchant. Ha ha. I’m looking at buying a bay (not owned one before) and the chassis plate looks wrong, hence asking for a pic so I can compare, that’s all. Not interested in the numbers on the plate, more interested in the format/language and how/where (exactly) it is attached (I know it’s behind the drivers seat on RHD). Looks like it’s been removed, badly, then reattached, almost as badly… surely that wouldn’t be normal practice when painting something that is old and would benefit from the provenance of leaving it in place? Hope that all makes sense. Ta Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The M plate is a silver square with numbers on it, that is riveted on. The chassis number is usually stamped in the engine bay
If it is supposed to be in German (like every picture I’ve come across) and it’s in English then it would ring alarm bells that it’s not genuine, well to me it would but maybe I’m being paranoid? That’s why I’m asking, that’s all. If it had a paper sticker on there with the correct chassis details you’d question what’s happened right? It’s an exaggeration of course but, if the chassis plate doesn’t look like the type it should have on it then I’m having the same doubt about the authenticity. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks Paul. But is there also a ‘chassis plate’ with the matching chassis number behind the drivers seat (1972/3) as well as the M plate behind the passenger seat (RHD)? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The plates are aluminium with the numbers embossed. From memory, the labelling is in German. A paper sticker would be suspicious!
I’ve blacked out part of the number as it’s not my vehicle (in case you were wondering) This is behind the o/s/f seat btw Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Mine is in German apart from "Made in Germany" in English. I think the one in your picture is genuine though. I reckon someone was welding/grinding from the other side of the bulkhead and didn't realise they were hacking up the bottom of it. When it got to painting or cleaning up that side of the weld they moved it and left it loose. The owner then stuck it back on without worrying too much because they knew for a fact it was genuine.
My memory is: chassis number embosed in the engine bay (should match what is on the v5). The silver m plate is behind one of the seats and I think it contains the chassis number along with other numbers. I don't think there is another chassis plate on the drivers seat. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but my RHD bus has no bulkhead on the passenger side and I think the m plate got relocated behind the drivers side, but that has a buddy seat covering it. Otherwise Id go and take a photo for you
