Cheers - I redid all the CV joints but one apeared a bit stiff and I do have a replacement ready but I will check the brakes first
22.05.2022 That noisy rear end - jacked up the van and had a good look around. Decided to take the drive shaft off to make sure it is not that - good news it isn’t as the same noise happens whether it is attached or not! Took the drum off and when I spin the stub axle, silence (should hope so as all new bearings etc). A few pics of the inside of the drum and the brake shoes - I think the drum is to blame: Not pretty Also, made a video of me just turning the offending brake drum and then with the engine running and wheel being turned around by the engine: Rotating the drum by hand: Engine spinning the wheel: I think I have another drum somewhere so I will dig it out and check the condition of that (JK wants £50 for one…….) 26.02.2022 Didn’t get to fit the new drums yesterday but did today. Noise has gone now so I am pleased Need to check the clutch pedal as it has too much movement (rocking) and rubs against the floor when pressed - hopefully easy to fix. Will then venture further (after getting a roadside assistance policy - which one is recommended?)
27.02.2022 Had a fun drive in the van - its first trip to the petrol station in 17 years Changing gear is still like stirring porridge but the scariest thing was the clutch pedal went all floppy and made changing gear pretty scary - managed to get it on the drive (reversed it on the drive so easier to work on the front end!!) A picture of how the clutch pedal ended: The problem was the bolt wasn’t long enough so the nut wasn’t locking down - found a longer nut and all good now. The horn has stopped working - the live cable has caught up with the steering gear and snapped so will need to sort it out somehow. Still moving forward I suppose
06.03.2022 Worked on getting the horn working again - the previous connector had just pulled free so put a new spade on and re-routed the cable. Tested by turning the steering wheel and no snagging. Will keep my eye on it but should be ok now
Is that the correct wiring for the horn? Usually the horn button is a switched earth so the wire usually bridges the rubber gap of the steering coupling to give a route to earth. Maybe there's another type, I don't know, but that looks wrong to me as it will just wrap the wire around the column when you go to full lock won't it?
This is how mine is so cannot comment on if its right or not I'm afraid. With the new routing everything works as it should and the cable no longer gets caught on the mechanism
With the driver's seat out I could access a bit more inside so added some grommets to the holes I have in tubs (no pics) and also added a grommet to the hole for the clutch pedal (no pics) so it doesn’t rub on the metal. While the seat was out, Morty, our cat decided to have a rest on it….. Whilst tiding up around the tub found 2 missing bits, the knob for adjusting the driver’s seat back angle and also a rubber bobbin that goes under the passenger seat, mounted on the tub Tiny steps Regarding the sloppy gear stick, it was mentioned by someone (Graham or Simon off the Earlybay forum) about the insert on the front of the shaft. Well I did replace it when I rebuilt everything, but when I grab the shaft (behave at the back….) and move it there is some movement so this won’t help I suppose
Took out RAC roadside assistance - me that's covered and not the vehicle. Also replaced the rear boots this morning: The original tyres were 22 years old - ouch
Decided that all the 2nd hand bumper steps I found were just not worth the money so bought new ones from JK. Seem to be good so at the weekend decided to fit the bumper and steps. Fitted the off side bracket with no real issues then went to fit the nearside and it has a bloody broken bolt in the hole. Tried to drill out but no good - will have a look this week (depending on the weather) to see if I can get it out:
I’d build up weld on top of the snapped bolt The heat will loosen it up and the blob will give you something to fasten mole grips to. You’ll need some decent quality mole grips though.
Thanks - I have an extractor kit thingy so will try that - if it fails then on to the good old welder trick!!
In all honesty, your extractor may just cause more strife by snapping. The other nasty thing that happens is your max force rips the captive nut off and then you'll be stuffed. This is the advantage of the weld which should break up the rust, expand stuff and loosen the stub of the bolt. Hit it with your highest power to get started building up a blob to get hold of, then you can reduce the power a bit, Don't clean the paint and aim accurately.
What about sticking a nut over it and then filling with weld on max? You’d have something to get purchase on then
I will be welding up-side-down so the nut will probably not work - will still try the extractor and if I fail you will never see me on this forum as Zed will haunt me
I'm just thinking you managed to shear off the bolt so it's likely that next time (without heat) something else will break - either the extractor or the captive nut fixing. I wouldn't bother with the nut either, I've never been able to aim through a nut and get a strong enough weld onto the stub. But - it's the heat what does it and you'd probably barely hurt the surrounding paint. Maybe drilling for the biggest extractor you can will do the job.
I think the nut was rusted or something - the front bumper brackets were taken off many years ago so not sure. When the weather picks up will give it ago.
