My brakes are fine but I would like them to be better. Is there any brake upgrades that exist and are worth it?
If you have a servo I would look at the condition of pads discs shoes etc and fluid, if they are like our prototype bay the callipers were in a poor state so I replaced them and put decent pads in.
There’s a guy on Facebook VW bus restoration group called Bob Karmann who’s put a video of a 4 pot caliper conversion from a Landrover Discovery to a Latebay , very straightforward swap and cheap too !
Servo reduces the effort required to apply the brakes so having one fitted will make a noticeable difference as you don’t need to put as much force in the pedal to brake harder.
I’ve got standard discs at front and standard drums at back, with standard servo. Brakes are excellent. I’d say fix what you’ve got. Maybe servo would be the best addition if you haven’t got one
Might improve it a bit but remember most of the braking effort is on the fronts. I personally wouldn’t go to the expense of trying to convert to rear disc brakes for the gains you would get. Adding a servo would be a much better option.
The brakes on a Bay are really good, if yours aren't then there is a problem with your setup/pads/fluid etc that won't be remedied by "upgrading" anything.
If the lads running 140bhp Subaru motors are happy with stock brakes.... That's a good measure of anyones money
I'll vouch for the brakes being good. I was once fully loaded with the family and camping gear on an empty A road doing 60 down a fairly long hill. The chap at the junction at the bottom of the hill watched me sail down it for about 20 seconds before pulling out on me. They do stop well, but really need a louder horn
