Calm down all you old hippies, this is not what you think Weed Appreciation Day was established to remind people that a weed is just a plant growing where you don’t want it to grow. Blackberries are fantastic when you find them growing wild in the forest, but are perhaps less desirable when you find them growing in the middle of your rhododendron bushes. That’s basically the details of what makes a weed a weed, and there are hundreds of ‘weeds’ that are incredibly important in health, science, and culinary uses. This lockdown has even got me doing a bit of gardening - not a lot, but I'm guessing that there will be more to come.
I’m partial to weeds, I think they get a raw deal when there are really pretty ones and gardeners want to just pull them out
Morning all. I haven’t got a weed story, but a few weeks ago I asked my local garden centre to pick me up a 12ft flowering cherry tree while he was collecting his stock in Italy. I went to collect it and he asked me if I had the voucher from the local rag that gave 50% off. I didn’t, but the old lady behind me had a spare and I got the tree for £12.50. Result
Dig for victory Soggz Might plant the first of my spuds this arvo. Been holding off because we’ve had a few sharp frosts of a morning.
I put my spuds in pots and with all this time on my hands I have been making raised beds in prep for broad beans and tomatoes.Courgettes and cucumbers popping up in the greenhouse. I cheated with the cabbage, cauli's and carrots by buying them already started off.
Potaoes and garlic down the allotment. Will be filling the garden with vegetables instead of half dead grass.
We tend to start ours off a few weeks later up here in the frozen North. Home grown veggies rule though
Nuked the allotment today, first time it's not had a moat around it since October. My plot is right next to the gate, if food supplies go belly up this year I'm going to be doing a lot of digging for some bugger else.
I was too slow off the mark this year, and there's not a seed potato for miles. Have ended up buying online, but they won't be dispatched for another month. Ah well, at least they'll go on for a bit later into the year. Just moving the contents of the compost heap onto the veg patch ready to dig over. Happy days!
