as opposed to what £900+ quid for refurbed carbs plus manifolds +linkage etc add to that a 123 distributor @£350 and your a lot of the way there …..
Happy with my ict setup but never had anything else so I can’t compare. Stock 2.0 type 4. mike (wayoutwesty) set mine up, jetting, balance and fitted the low pressure fuel pump. He’s a very nice chap and very knowledgeable on these carbs.
$3,495 plus shipping, plus import tax, plus installation, plus tuning – unfortunately there are very, very few people capable of tuning a Megasquirt package. https://thedubshop.com/dual-throttle-body-fuel-injection-package-with-ignition-type-4/
It's the setting up bit that would just be too much for the average punter, unless they've got a dyno or rolling road. Same as the choice of the advance curves on a 123. How would you ever know what performed best? Most folk set them to the default.
This^. There is no doubt that fuel injection and crank fired ignition is better than carbs and a distributor but IMO impossible to justify unless you are into technology regardless of cost. And you could probably count on one hand those that have full aftermarket engine management properly set up. I’ve heard time and time again how easy it is to produce a 3D map to do whatever you want but I have never heard that it is easy to produce a map that the engine wants. Engine manufacturers don’t find it easy but good luck to those that try, get it right and it’ll be good.
Well I did my Micro squirt for sub 1k . There are companies in the U.K. that supply it A guy at work has just done a type 1 with microquirt and Mexican FI parts for around 1k as well with crank fire ignition megasquirt self tune and setting up micro squirt is no different than setting up carbs if not easier . carbs are always running at a compromise your 3D map even if not 100% is going to be 100% better . you £350 distributor is still running of a worn brass gear with A degree of backlash . I get what your saying and each to their own but Eurocarb charge a fortune for what are second hand 30 year old carbs I think I paid £175 for my dell 36’s
I’ve had 40IDFs on my 2.0l for about 9 years, they work well, but 40’s are slightly too large for a standard engine and you might find 34’s closer to optimum. This kit is very good value, and far better than a Weber progressive on a type 4. https://www.dellorto.co.uk/shop/vw-...kits/type-4-twin-weber-ict34-carburettor-kit/
I took the twin solex off mine and fitted a 32/36 Webber gives the van more mid range the solex carbs always seem to give the van flat spots and for the money the Webber’s were the best value, be careful though I have seen some copies of Webber’s being sold of cheap quality not the thing you want on your pride and joy.
Weber, even when there’s two of them. And a 32/36 Weber carb on a Type 4 is the worst you could possibly fit.
You said earlier ‘That's where Micro/Megasquirt come in to their own you can tune them to every RPM…’ Are you now saying that Micro/Megasquirt self-tunes? Lots of people ask what ignition map they should use for a particular engine and the reply is that it (Megasquirt) is easy to tune to what you want. That doesn’t sound like self-tuning to me and a crank fired ignition with roughly the right map is no better than a distributor with roughly the right map.
@77 Westy - that's interesting! I'm definitely between the 34ICTs and the 40IDFs.... There's a fairly big price difference so would defo be keen on more thoughts on this from people with experience. My type 4 is stock and I'm not planning major upgrades so maybe the 34s are better?? Sent from my Redmi Note 7 using Tapatalk
Worth a read regarding 34's https://www.wayoutwestie.com/aircooled-tech/running-weber-icts-on-a-vw-aircooled-engine/ Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
If you’re going the 34ict route from Eurocarb it’s definitely worth the extra £100 for the better manifolds, linkage and air filters in the CB performance kit. The empi manifolds are too short. https://www.dellorto.co.uk/shop/vw-...r-kits/type-4-weber-ict34-kit-cb-performance/
That's the ones I'm going for, I e booked way out westy to come do the install and tune for me Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
Been looking at this tread and wondering how you got with way out westy fitting and setting up your carbs and how your van is running. I am thinking of getting him to set up my ICTs but have heard mixed review's.
