Westfalia roof dimensions and roof fabric lining

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by jamiesuzette, Feb 13, 2020.

  1. Hi has anyone put a westfalia pop top on a bus and if so have you any dimensions for bolts etc. Plus any help with installing a fabric roof would be nice tips etc...

I have asked in prototype bay but not had many replies and joined this site before I bought the bus.

Look forward to some replies. [IMG][IMG]

The early roofs were fitted to vans with a factory sunroof. Does yours already have this, or are you chopping your tin roof?

  6. No mine does not have a factory sunroof so no worries there and the hole is just behind the cab area as shown in picture I know where to cut the roof just would like a diagram of where of the bolts and fittings go to secure roof .

    Thanks for replying to me.[IMG]

It should have the H frame fitting for the front end....the big horizontal bar you push up to open.

did you get anywhere with the bracket you didn't have? I have one but it doesn't seem to do anything. Like the one in the photo you posted it looks like two hooks (one on the roof and one on the van) but they don't seem to engage with anything. (mines a '73 Westy continental front hinge). Not had it long so would be good to know what it's for!!!

Front centre? It should lock together when the roof is down to stop the front lifting when you're driving.

I pushed my roof forward a bit so they overlap now. Is the roof supposed to sit on the van roof? Looks like my roof is sitting on the hook in the roof now. I think that the brackets(hooks) might have bent to be out of position. What do you reckon?

  16. Yeah still looking for the catch that bolts onto the tin roof may have to fabricate the part[IMG]

I think they are supposed to be the other side of each other if you get what I mean. The one on your GRP roof looks bent forwards. Do they have slots to adjust? I had one of these for ten years and didn't pay that bit much attention TBH.

I have tried to draw as the bracket sits now (A) and how I think you are saying it should be (B) . Have I got it right? It was sat like B until yesterday when I moved it to be like A!!

    Cheers for any help

  19. Hi. That’s an early front hinged roof it is the correct type for your van.
The later rear hinged roof has the roof rack part at the front and allows for a bigger roof bed.
Afaik the early roof does not have the H frame strut. Rather 2 separate over centre supports, one each side.
    Have you looked at buttiesbits.com?
The westfalia parts he lists for T2A are reproductions of what your roof should have.
    Good Luck!

    Great drawings!
Yes, that is exactly what I meant. Has that sorted it? Does it snap together as you shut it?

You might have to pre-tension (bend) one or both parts so they spring together as the roof shuts - That's a semi-educated guess. It might take a bit of trial and error to get it "just so".
