VW UK have sent me a letter confirming that my T2 was manufactured on June 26th 1979. Any idea what I now need to do to register it as an historic vehicle, and to partially reclaim the road fund license. Ta
‘You do not need to pay vehicle tax if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1979. If you do not know when your vehicle was built, but it was first registered between 1 and 7 January 1979, you do not have to pay vehicle tax.’ https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles/vehicles-exempt-from-vehicle-tax
And I’m assuming this will update to 1st Jan 1980 in the new year. Or the government will be in such a shambles they’ll have other things to bother about.
You'll then have the challenge of finding a post office with staff that know how to register your vehicle as historic. It took me ages. Still not had a refund for the additional road fund licence I paid. I probably need to chase them for it.
I gave up trying to get a refund in the end, I figured just getting free tax was a victory and I'd be quids in anyway
My "40 year" tax exemption should be due soon, but the government website seems unclear as to when My camper's date of registration was April 1980, yet I have a letter from VW UK confirming the date of manufacture as June 1979. The local Post Office reckon the "start date" is the registration date, yet the government website suggests it's the Manufacture date. Any advise welcome on how I should proceed - in order to a) Stop paying tax from January 2020 and b) Get a refund for the tax presently paid up to the end of March 2020. Thanks in advance Mike
Good luck with the refund. Go to a Post Office with your V5C and proof of age, they’ll then send it off to be changed (or possibly like in my case, loose it).
The eligibility date is the build date. The current date for tax exemption is shown on the DVLA website. Forget the Post Office. All they have access to is the registration date. They'll get confused when you start mentioning a different build date. Send your V5C, the VW build date confirmation and your current MOT certificate off to the DVLA with a covering letter explaining it in words of one syllable. After a while, you'll get a new V5C marked HISTORIC, plus a (partial) road tax refund if applicable. Worked for me, and didn't take that long.
It will be tax exempt from April 2020. No refund due, just sort the paperwork at the post office before April. Job done.
From https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles/vehicles-exempt-from-vehicle-tax "Historic vehicle tax exemption You can apply to stop paying for vehicle tax if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1979. You must tax your vehicle even if you do not have to pay." I assume the website will be updated in a couple of days to 1st January 1980, in which case the exemption should start and my partial refund due.
No. It’s always been the case that tax exemption starts from 1st April the year following its 40th birthday.
Hmmm, mine was reclassified quite straightforwardly but they lost my original paperwork including the VW conformity certificate, sent me someone else’s Ducato van paperwork and you’ve reminded me I never got a refund or a response to my letter pointing out their errors. As said before, good luck!
I’m hoping this is the case though I had a chat with somebody on a government web site who told me it would be April 1st. My bus was built Feb 1979, and my documents say it was first registered 31st Dec 1979 ( it’s a German import). We’ll know soon.
