Looking for some advice. New house has detached garage, pitched roof is pretty big and I’d like to board it for storage. I don’t plan on putting a ton of weight up there though. Joists are three by one ish with a 560mil spacing. It’s dry but it’s also Wales so not the Sahara. I’m assuming the 18mm chipboard tongue and grove stuff isn’t suitable. Is the green moisture resistant stuff any good? What about OSB? I don’t want to go full marine ply...would 12mm hardwood ply be suitable? Any other options?
If possible I'd use joist hangers off the wall plates each side to put some more substantial joists across the span. 3x1 isn't really man enough for floor joists.
We have a garage with roof like that and just have chipboard loft floor screwed too it , it has a lot of stores up there and my silth like goes up fa wander some times , still ear
I've fitted chipboard in my loft. Absolutely fine if it's dry and you're not storing tons up there. It's not like it's a high traffic area, and the packs come in convenient size for fitting through your loft hatch I would make sure you fit some decent lighting first. I have two 6' fluorescent tubes and a convenient switch next to the hatch
I have one of those flip over ladders that I use to go up and have a convenient opening with my bench vice bellow so I can clamp the ladder to the vice whilst zipping up and down and stopping Betty from trapping me upt there
Your posh I have random bits of wood and old kitchen doors etc just resting on the joists. Every time I try and get anything down using a wobbly step ladder random bits of stuff fall down in different places.
If it’s a trussed roof then there’s no issues at all. No different to storage in a shed really, just make sure you keep it off the roof felt. However if you do start to get heavier up there or wanna make it stronger from the off, fit 4X2” joists across the opposite way at 400 ctc then t&g chipboard flooring, moisture resistant might not be a bad shout either. Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, lights and access is a good idea too.
I doubled up the frames with wood between them to make it more like 300mm spacing going from front to back (roof ridge across width of garage in middle of a block) , placed two pieces of 2x6" wood across the garage between the walls bolted to them to support the frames and my new joists. Then boarded over with normal tongue amd groove flooring. As access I store my 2 section extension ladder so I can climb it. Its pretty solid.
We've got much the same in our garage (the "joists" are part of the roof trusses). Had boggo T&G chipboard up there for years, and it's been fine.
What he said. Sounds like you have trussed rafters and not awfully big ones at that! Probably not a great deal of room up there for larger items and assume your just using the space as shelf space. If your going to walk on it that’s a bit different
Just use anything longish and flatish that was either damaged in the house move, or left behind by the previous owner.
I don’t want to put a ton of stuff up there, not in desperate need to walk about either, just can’t move on ground level at all. We moved in start November and due to weather and time it all got thrown in enmasse.
That's got more support than Bazza's hernia briefs. I'd just slide planks down through that lot, its too awkward to fit anything else. The joists should be ok as you haven't got the weight of a ceiling hanging of it.
