Syncro - let’s off-road!

  1. The refurbished propshafts are back in stock at Brickwerks - there is a note on their description about if the exchange prop has had the UJs staked in previously that t will not be any use to them - @theBusmonkey @pkrboo any idea what the heck this means and how do I tell? As far as a quick google says its about the UJ yokes being pressed and deformed of instead if circlips being used to retain the bearing thinger - if I can see circlips in the yoke am I in the clear. Otherwise I may as well get the sliding type one. Tried messaging brickwerks no rply as yet.

Yeah Matt, simply as you say, you are looking for snap rings or circlips on the joint ends. Staking is a repair that uses tiny metal stakes/pins to hold the joints in. It involves drilling the housings I think in order to fit the pins.
I'm sure I'm right in thinking that the original design uses odd sized joints so in order for GKN to be able to refurb to original size and spec the joint yokes/flanges/cast carriers need to be undamaged by previous repair.
One of the reasons I decided to go for the revised telescopic design despite having my OG prop reconditioned previously.
However, I would guess most vans are run with the original design, rebuilt.
Quality of the main tube is better from Steyr but so far so good on the replacement. At 20k plus miles I'm hoping there is at least that again before I have to reconsider a rebuild, and then any decent driveline workshop could do it:thumbsup:

    Missed this..soz.
Alignment and fitting is way easier. No longer do you have to loosen the front diff on it's mounts in order to separate the flanges of the prop and diff input shaft.
The new design prop just telescopes into position and as long as the diff has been aligned previously there is no need to move anything.
I've never really understood the exact alignment requirements of the drivetrain coz you'd expect the uj's to take up any off set, but there is a procedure so VW/Steyr must have considered it important:rolleyes:
(I use a bit of string with a bit of guess work btw...);)

  4. That's great thanks - I'm sure I spotted circlips having looked quickly - I will have a better look when I'm back off hols.

I wonder if they would want my old prop to be reconditioned and knock some pennies off the slidey type one. hmm.

I'll stop with the questions one day...!

  5. The stainless exhaust fitted is lovely and sounds great but I noted that it was noisy inside. In an effort to keep onside with the rest of my family and also to make it more useable i needed to get this sorted

I have refitted the sound deadening mats over the engine shelf and bulkhead. The induction roar was also fairly crazy without this in place so hopefully it will sort that out too.

Also the chap that makes the exhaust system for the GTI engine swap makes a kit to fit the silencer to quieten it down.

Short bit is a tailpipe reducer and the long perforated baffle goes into the back box inlet side. Be interesting to see the effect.

  9. That’s right!!

It’s booked in for Thursday am

    However,

I’m now heading a rumble from the gearbox area when at idle when the clutch is up- it def wasn’t doing that when I test drive it but does now not really loud but it’s there.

To be honest it doesn’t sound good to me!!!

I’ll put it through the MOT and see how it gets on but need to selling the family silver I think!!!

  11. Spigot Shaft Bearing - I think that’s prob the best case scenario....

Anyway having the gearbox oil dropped tomorrow to see what debris is in there to see if the ‘box has shat itself take it from there

  15. Gearbox oil should be shiny silver right?

@theBusmonkey Neil and Mr Talbot are reckoning that on the Limited info available now that the main bearing is eating the case, which is nice. It’ll wait until I can get the van in the garage to drop box and send it off to them for an assessment-looks like the Paris-Dakar rally is off this year....

Other news is that one front wheel is ready to fall off so new bearing is on the way - hopefully it’s not chewed the CV end thinger but, probably has.

On a small, but frankly at this stage much needed, positive note - the recon propshaft turned up.

If only I had a gearbox to bolt it to...

Anyway after a sub-optimal day I will be going to Pilates to realign my chakras and then finish this off.

Until the next update of the self-induced hell that is owning a Syncro

    Adios losers

  16. Ouch, but that's syncro ownership for you!!

Did Neil not mention they are money pits??

  18. I remember both you and Neil mentioning money pit along the way!

I still really like it though and it’s being forgiven for now!

The gearbox is being refilled and I’ll check the oil again in a few hundred miles it’ll give me a bit of time to get the camper off to a nice storage lace for a little while so I can use the garage. - it’s had work done on it with the bearings replaced but something has gone awry!

Hopefully it won't be too serious and we can just tickle it with the naughty stick rather than having to give it a good thrashing!
