Does anyone know what the 'gooey stuff' is that VW used to seal around the wiring loom(s) where it enters/exits the body, at the front? I am at the 'assembly' stage of my restoration and feel that if i could get hold of something similar that VW used then it may last another 40 years!
It's similar to stuff called Dum Dum mastic, a kind of squishy non-setting black sealant. I don't think they make it any more, as they showed a picture of the tin to a rat and it died eventually, so now it's banned. Not sure what the equivalent might be.
Quick google points at butyl sealant or "non setting mastic". Used on pipework, roofing, automotive. I expect you will find it in roofing sections in DIY stores..
Good quality gutter sealant is the stuff , doesn't set and go brittle Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
We still use it at work. It’s required on some weather strips for sealing them to the body. I can give you a Mercedes part number for a roll of it but i am sure there are cheaper options out there. ^^^ this stuff?
Caravan suppliers sell non-setting sealing mastic for sealing round windows etc. I used some for my roof light.
Is that the guy who sticks the computer into the diagnostic plug, quotes weird codes and shakes his head ?....or am I confusing you with a plumber, sorry heating engineer?
