The idea for spreadsheet day came about on February 2010, when the importance of spreadsheets in day to day business operations, and in fact living, became apparent to its creator. By the following October, celebrations were underway.

All of it really began back in October of 1979, when the first spreadsheet program Visicalc, was released for the Apple II, and the process of organising and computing massive amounts of data became stream-lined and simple.

It was developed by Dan Bricklin of Software Arts, and was then produced for distribution by Personal Software, and marked the transition of Apple II’s from a machine for computer enthusiasts into a viable tool for business.

What made VisiCalc so important was its ability to be used on personal computers, finally putting this valuable tool into the hands of homeowners and small business owners alike.

I must admit to not having used a spreadsheet since we sold our business. I know some people use them for all parts of their lives, but not me :hattip:

Spreadsheets .. putting programming into the hands of those who shouldnt.

I have ssen two managers lose their jobs when their parallel universe reporting spreadsheets went wonky .. one ended up billing a customer for stuff that hadnt even begun being manufactured.

But as a science tool for analysing data when you cant be bothered to write a program....brilliant.

The number of clients I’ve worked with where their entire business logic is encapsulated in a spreadsheet is terrifying!

  19. I spend too long working on spreadsheets, I can't believe that i used to work with Excel when it only had about 63,000 lines i now regularly find the 1,000,000 or so lines available too small:eek: They're not much fun to be honest but then there's the statistical analysis
