World Mental Health Day was established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health. In some countries around the world, it forms just one part of the larger Mental Illness Awareness Week.

Mental health problems, ranging from issues like depression and anxiety disorders to conditions like schizophrenia, affect millions of people around the world. In fact, according to current statistics, 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem during their lifetime and many more will see friends of family members affected.

The purpose of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues, increase education on the topic and attempt to eliminate the stigma attached. It is hoped that this, in turn, will encourage sufferers to seek help and support.

I think most of us will have been affected one way or another. At least we live in a time when it has become acceptable to seek help.

hopefully now people feel more able to seek help and be less stigmatised so have to suffer in silence

Keep an eye out for your friends and family; people do still suffer in silence, especially blokes, and may think they can deal with it themselves. Everyone should have someone they can turn to.

I think we all have, one way, or another. It’s just recognising it and dealing with it.

  8. Mental issues can be how some see someone or how they see themselves . The brain can work in mysterious ways . Being aware is not always detectable by the normal eye or even so called professionals . Some can’t be relaxed without substance , some are made different with it , it’s a mine field . I think we all have issues of some kind that affects how we deal with things , that’s probably why most don’t seek any help ! Because they are more scared of the consequences . My uncle said goodbye to the world after a row with my nan . He’d never had a row with her before or any of the family. :( Good luck everyone .

I think everyone worries too much about everyone else, personally.
