It's a great read. Just finished the chapter where he's summoned back to Moscow....talk about tense. Even though I know he's ultimately alright...it still gets your heart racing. You'll love it
I nearly passed out reading his version! Remember reading about the other end in London. Someone had to get Maggie T’s permission to set the whole thing in motion (think it was Maggie). Was so secret her private secretary had to drive up to Norfolk (or poss Balmoral) where she was staying with HMQ, beat his way past various snotty courtiers and drag her out into the garden to discuss it.
Right, I finished it. It's belter of a yarn. Recommended to TLBers Surprising Vlad hasn't had a go at him (although he was hoiked off to hospital recently, so maybe he's had a go).
It would make a great film if they could do justice to it. Tom Hardy playing Gordievsky? Dame Judy would have to be in it obviously
Current book I'm reading is the Riddle of the Sands a spy story with a sailing theme set on the Freisan Islands first published in 1903. It's a paperback and like most books I buy nowadays was bought second hand.
I really enjoy browsing in second hand bookshops. Last one I was in was Barter Books in Alnwick. Wonderful place for bookworms to spend a few hours.
We have just had two weeks in Tuscany and paid a little visit to Collidi the home of Pinocchio. I brought an English version of the story and will enjoy reading it again. Other books Anthony Beever, Robert Harris and who cannot resist Lee Child
I read that awhile back and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think that it was made into a film with Jenny Aguter. I've visited the islands and really got the feel of the story. Probably one of the first spy books ever and a one off by Erskin Childers.
I'm afraid I don't do bookshop browsing, most of my secondhand books are bought online through abebooks.co.uk considerably cheaper than new and a fraction of the price. I believe the author was an IRA sympathiser, didn't know about the film perhaps when I have finished the book I might have a watch.
Yea I've read that one .have you read Narrow boat to Carcassonne ,great life changing story , would you cross the channel in a narrow boat !
I read something like it. Not sure that was the title though. Read a lot of narrow boat books as I quite like the escapism from the comfort of my armchair
Why? I can honestly say, that it’s helped me build engines, weld, spray, maintain vehicles and machinery and all sorts of other useful things, like learn electrics, properties of various greases for high speed applications, pruning certain fruit trees at certain times of the year. My bog used to be stacked with reference books, for the usual morning dump! Wasted time, otherwise! ‘Every day is a school day!’.
