Going Back to Stock Oil Pickup on Type 4 Engine

A PO fitted a sump extension as well as an external oil cooler. I intend to keep the cooler but get rid of the sump extension. Having removed the extension pipe it looks correct as per Haynes, and I think I've spotted the O ring in my rebuild gasket set.

I know I'm going to need to get hold of some original parts for the strainer and cover, but my question is, is the pickup all I need to be able to reassemble the case halves? Is there anything needs to go in there first?

Just the pickup needed, the other parts are fitted from the outside.

Thanks. Thought as much from Haynes and Bentley, but always good to get confirmation

Just out of interest how has the oil cooler been plumbed into the engine?

It's an extension that fits between the case and the filter. Edit after googling - it's a sandwich plate

On my to-do list is how to re-route the pipes so I can still use the heater pipe

I have my cooler from a sandwich plate too but it’s a bit tricky to fit it with the heater pipe. I used a spacer/adapter between the sandwich plate and the engine to lower the take-off connections then drilled through the tins so the cooler hoses pass under the pushrod tubes above the tin. The hoses pass over the drive shafts and across to the right where the (28 row) cooler is mounted – a total of four metres of hose.

I recommend you use a filter with an anti-drain back valve to reduce the delay in pressure build-up on engine start. Mann W920/14 has an anti-drain back valve and is the same dimensions as a standard filter.
