Best varnish/paint for roof rack? Refresh metal?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Louise, Jul 10, 2019.

  1. I've taken my roof rack off to try to restore it to former glory. Not sure which way to go, whether to sand & varnish, or sand & paint? If I varnish, what's the best type to use?

Am not sure if the metal work is chrome... how can I refresh this?

  2. I would sand the wooden slats and use Danish Oil or similar to protect them. I have a similar rack so I suspect the metal is just silver powder coat like mine.

  3. Is danish oil suitable for outdoor use?

I’d just use whatever varnish you’ve got in the shed.

I used yacht varnish on mine and it lasted pretty well.

  6. Yes its fine. Or teak oil is also pretty hard wearing.

Oil will give a matt look and will need redoing over time (maybe not too long).

Varnish is shiny and will last

  11. The slats have silvered by time in the sun you might have to be very aggressive with the sandpaper. Belt sander and some medium wood stain then a good coat of varnish.
