I don’t know if this a thing, but does anyone know of any mystery tours / treasure hunts / rallies in the U.K. or Europe that we could do in the campervan?
Just disappear off for a week and make it up as you go along - no plans , just head wherever the wind takes you . One of the many pleasures of owning an old van Sent from my SM-A320FL using Tapatalk
Use to love doing car treasure hunt I think they got banned due to the dangers of people randomly stopping. Use to do something similar called the National rally on motorbikes you had a map of checkpoints all over the uk with set milage between different checkpoints You had to do as many as you could without going over 500miles and you had 24 hours to do it and this was before satnavs.
I sometimes put the satnav on just showing the local map...but every time I get to a junction I turn according to the sun. The goal is never to drive on a dual carriageway or a motorway. Doing this I have made a round trip of maybe 60 miles into 150 miles...in Hampshire. Best done in a bus starting off at 4 in the afternoon and ending up at twilight in summertime.
Bit of research I heard about last year shows that making journeys where you don't know the route or destination mitigates against Alzheimer's ... Something to do with primitive survival instincts apparently?
When I do these mystery tours, I will often reach places I have seen on road signs, or bits of road I have been on before but as a part of a different trip. There is a good area north of Havant, and another north of Bishops Waltham where there are lots of single track roads, and no mobile coverage. I dont break down in the bus ...
I have another fun variant which is trying to drive the bus down the back streets of Portsmouth. You can see over more cars there as they dont run to big vehicles in order to pack the most in, so you can hurtle from gap to gap along roads with parked cars both sides. Again after some random driving you suddenly find yourself somewhere useful. Or not in the bus in a hire car in Pollensa town in Majorca where I ended up in those streets that are about 20cm wider than the car...
