Hi all, So i'm pretty much finished with my camper interior (will post pics in a week or so when ive upholtered the seat) Literally the only thing i'm missing now is a radio and speakers. And i have no idea.. Will any generic radio off ebay work? And any speakers? If so which brands are good'uns? any help much appreciated. Thanks, Carl
most radios are similar size. you shouldn't have to cut the dash to fit a standard radio. We have gone for a bluetooth radio and speakers to save wiring them in and run the phone through it for i'tunes and hands free. This radio was recommended by @PIE so we've gone for that and a bose bluetooth speaker. if it isn't up to the mark we'll upgrade the radio https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Blue...m5216631307:g:n88AAOSwyYRcM7Su&frcectupt=true speaker https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bose-Sou...578856&hash=item3fc0f2fd2b:g:DYoAAOSwrHBcwGSU
I have a retrosound unit. It fits the dash nicely without having to cut it out. I have the usb connectors etc cut into the inside of the dashboard. Set of period blaupuncts in the tie boards
Cheers poptop, i have a bang and olufsen speaker that i sit on the dash, and then use my phone via bluetooth.. but it runs out of battery so want something hardwired ideally.
It doesn't matter what one you get, once you get to 50mph you wouldn't hear an orchestra playing in the back
I thought all single din head units were the same size ? I changed to a modern single din head unit but had to trim a little out of the dash to get it to fit. Put a pair of good 4" speakers in the kick panels as i didn't want to cut the door panels or the bed kickboard. A good bluetooth speaker in the back is the best idea. I wired mine to a change over switch in the glove box so i can switch the radio feed from the engine battery when driving to the leisure battery when parked up.
There are two standards, DIN-D and DIN-E. The bus is D, you can cut it out to E but I didn’t want to do that to the dash.
I have to turn my stereo down to hear the engine properly at 65mph... but that is a Sony 4x50 watts Bluetooth head unit with 2x100 watt subwoofers. My bus came with the DIN fitting modification done with a tin opener by a PO. I once adjusted the sharp flappy metal bits with a hammer to make an approximately rectangular hole..
i have a period vw head unit in the dash wired up to a single speaker under the dash (original position) but it's pointless when you're on the move, so as above, bose bluetooth speaker sits on the dash and we stream off a phone/ ipod. i don't want to hack the van for speakers in doors/cupboards/kick plates etc so this is a good compromise. just googled my oem radio - i think it's a blaupunkt emden, really nice that it has vw logo'd knobs. It's not great functionally but looks too good to ever be parted from the bus..
