This is my ride....

  1. It is sad how some people will sell things that are not fit for purpose :(
Starting to the loose the will (again) especially with the weather changing too.

Started to pull the compressor apart.

This is a picture of the whole:

Undid the bolts that hold the engine to the electric motor and it only moved 5 mm or so.

So, took the end of the engine off (removed oil) and this is inside - very simple:

A view through the gap betwixt engine and leccy motor:

So - removed the fan shroud on the other side - when I move the fan by hand the pistons go up and down no issue - when I use the electric motor (holding the engine tight to the electric motor casing it runs well. If the engine moves just a fraction then all stops - so I need to stop the movement.

Need to remove the engine, but a circlip is keeping the fan mounted to the shaft that runs all the way to the piston.

Guess what I can’t find…… my circlip pliers. That will teach me to tidy up :(

Working away for the next few days so will have a look for the pliers next week end.

Found a few minutes today so tackled the tab that had come off the heat exchanger

Welded on, ground down and then a dash of primer added.

Hope to get it fitted over this week and also find my bloody pliers so I can sort my compressor!!

Good weather so spent some time on the van.

Connected up the last 2 brake pipes:

Also made a plate to go over the rectangular hole I made for the wiring to the engine bay.

Once the weather warms up will give it a lick of paint.

Started to put the gearbox bits on but waiting on an order from VW Heritage so put the rear support bracket.

Will continue the build hopefully next week if/when the delivery arrives

Thought I would continue with the engine build so managed to get the heat exchangers on but the bloody tubes don’t match up very well on one of the sides so the clamp doesn’t work so looking for suggestions and ideas please.

And this is what it looks like so far.

Off on holiday so not much will happen over the next few weeks.

  7. Well done Andy
    :)

  8. I had a similar situation and I used a beer can cut up and wrapped round and clamped, lasted a year then fitted vintage speed exhaust which doesn't have the knuckle bits so I ran the Flexi pipe straight down. If I were doing it again I would try a short length of the Ali flexi pipe and two jubilee clips, have fun.

  9. Thanks - I have some ali flexi pipe so may give that a go :)

Question - fit the drive shafts before fitting the gearbox or after?

    Picture with one side on:

  12. Make sense I suppose so will remove it and put it back in storage - cheers :)

  13. Removed the driveshaft ;)

Looked to put the new fuel pump in and when I pulled out the mounting plate thingy it left some behind which is now brittle and just crumbled when I tried to pull it out.

Some of it is still left in the hole so how best to remove without leaving too much floating around in the engine?

Also bridged the gap I had with the exhaust and heat exchangers using a little piece of aluminium heat exchanger pipe.

    Cheers

Tapped what was left in the hole and a big piece broke off and fell into the engine :(

Shall I leave it as it will get mashed up and hopefully end up being trapped by the oil filter?

Anyway, using an M8 tap and bolt and as a fulcrum the pitman arm from the steering mechanism managed to remove what was left and now fitted the new fuel pump.

Need to order a few more bits (clutch cable, hot air cables etc) before getting the gearbox installed then concentrate on getting the engine finished then get that mounted…..

  15. A 009 dissy? is that wise

still following and loving every bit

  16. Was on the engine when I bought it and ran OK so will leave for now (and fanks)!

Had a delivery at the weekend so added the fuel pipe and filter to the fuel tank feed.

Started to add the fan shroud but not a good fit so will need to do some fettling:

Not to bad on this side.

    But the other side;

Will have to attack it with a cutter by the looks of things.

Fitted the rear and front shocks and also sorted out the rear grommets that the brake pipe goes through at the same time (easier with it being warm).

    Nearside rear shock and grommet:

Used copper grease to help get the grommet in (also put it in hot water to soften it):

Used a piece of fuel pipe as a grommet for the pipe as can be seen in the picture:

Grommet on the offside in properly now:

Rear shock now installed on the offside:

    Front nearside shock:

Also mounted one of the engine support bar thingies - need to do the other but need some more bolts:

With the weather staying good decided to tackle a few jobs underneath.

First up add the steering damper - fairly straight forward.

Next up was the front gear shift rod - add the front bush, greased up then pushed in. Connected to the rear shaft, tightened up then some wire added.

Then the fun part - putting the gearbox in - used my trolly cart and a couple of jacks to get it into position and all good.

Took about an hour and a half to get it bolted up. Just need to connect the main rod to the gearbox and good to go.

Need the gearbox earth strap then all good.

Will continue on the engine assembly next
