Sooo, moss (the only vehicle type place remotely near me) do gates barricade ethanol proof in the following sizes; 3/16" = 4.76mm 5/16" = 7.93mm 1/4" = 6.35mm as the 5/16mm size has been used before in the engine bay, do i assume it's safe to do so again? i'm guessing the 3/16 is too small for tank to carbs and the 1/4 too big? did i mention it's just around the corner?
That fuel hose would *imply* you have 8mm connectors (tails) on the carbs etc, this is a common VW size, so it seems, for dual carb setups The hose needs to be a tight push fit, as per Paul's etc posts. That is what gives the seal, the clip just holds it all in place. The correct R9 size would be 7.6mm. Seems to me you need to be as close to 7.6mm as you can. One issue with this hoses recommended by others on here is that finding the right fit for 8mm nozzles is quite a struggle as it doesn't seems it's a common size in this ethanol resistant hose.
this is what i'm thinking - obviously 5/16 has been used post carbs but was this right or a bit of a bodge/ could be better? it would be good if i could use 5/16 gates' but... also, where does the step change happen, pre-carbs/after it goes through tinware?

On one of your photo, the fuel filter, that looks like the smaller size 5.6mm, hard to tell from a photo unless you can see the script. Yes, it's a Malpassi filter, the setup has been nicely done, from what I can see. The Malpsassi can accommodate that step change as Malpassi will have both sets of tails. Look one up on the web you'll see a step on the nozzle on both inlet and outlet on the Malpassi where you can push on both sizes of hose.
all of them? i had a quick google and found one that states 8mm - a massive part of the problem is not knowing what i've got, i've always left it to mechanics/engine builders. i'm not known for sticking my head in the noisy cupboard
I know! Someone apparently checked my fuel lines at the end of August and it's only done to techenders and back since and then up to the workshop where it remains. bah. It was due a full service last October but got out off due to work needed.

Sorry, mea culpa, only the 63mm Malpassi has both. I doubt yours is the 85mm, easy to check with a ruler for its size. I suspect yours is the 63mm, the 85mm would be overkill.
so.... i'm trying to work out my system here... i'm running 8mm twin dells with a standard 6mm mechanical fuel pump? What confuesed me is that @paulcalf has 8mm kunifer pipe, but i guess this could mean that he has a stepped in-line filter? it's a real pain not having the bus near to go check sizes etc.
Looking at your Malpassi photo in more detail. The nozzle going into the Malpassi filter is vertical the output to the carbs is horizontal. In the photo, on the vertical nozzle, can you see the pipe is only pushed on the first step?
