I’m refurbing my brake callipers and want to replace my bleed nipples I’ve noticed on eBay that stainless steel ones are available. I like the idea of corrosion resistance but will there be any sort of reaction with the cast metal of the calliper?
Dissimilar metals cause galvanic corrosion I just want to be sure that stainless steel would not be worse than the standard ones.
keep standard and put in a monthly maintenance schedule to clean them and apply a bit of protective crease
Is that what you do? I'm guessing 'yes' after the telling off you gave me at the weekend for moaning about fastener corrosion on the rear carriers!
Bit of light reading from the National Physical Laboratory on Galvanic Corrosion http://www.npl.co.uk/upload/pdf/bimetallic_20071105114556.pdf The notes in the pdf will be pretty much spot on as the work done by them sets the background to standards
The mix of stainless and normal steel makes normal steel corrode faster. And stainless steel also goes in for cold welding . So you could still get jammed bleed nipples. Use the steel ones, bleed your brakes regularly and replace as they start to rust.
