78 bay calliper mounting bolts

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paradox, Feb 18, 2019.

  1. The mounting bolts for my front callipers
    Ones shouldered and ones straight
Is the shouldered one supposed to be at the top or the bottom of the calliper?

Yeah, pretty sure mine are top, the shoulder in your caliper should confirm that.
I got a new caliper for one of the front discs, and it seems they've done away with the shoulder (annoying as I had to buy another bolt).

  3. It seems it depends on year
However to add to the confusion my van has ate callipers on it but for its year they should be girling.

Ones knackerd too much to refurb but the other ones fine.
I’m not sure if the good one is the left or the right hand side.

Just been reading this on the samba

Major and Gusbus both have ATE calipers

  5. So it seems the shouldered bolt to the top would make my good calliper a left hand side
However that puts the piston cut outs at the top and according to Bentley they should be at the bottom.

  6. Where did you get your new calliper from and does it have one bleed nipple or two?

It' a Varga one from Cool Air. One nipple from memory.
Neither my old ones, or the old ones had anti-squeal shims in them? Are they still needed? Guess I'll soon find out!

  9. That’s my intention
I just wanted to make sure I’d got the good calliper on the correct side

I’ve the pad backing plates here but the tabs that locate on the piston cut outs are flat with the plate
So they have either never been punched out or they have been flattened back down at some point.
They must be to stop the pistons rotating in the bore .

  10. I’d say they are needed.

They’re needed to reduce squeal and to locate the pistons – if the pistons have the cut-outs, and they should.

Bentley shows the shoulder bolt at the bottom for all years but different tightening torques. I don’t really see that it makes any difference whether the shoulder bolt is at the top or bottom as long as the cut-outs in the pistons are at the bottom.

Ok. Odd that mine didn't have them fitted and never squealed though? New caliper doesn't have the cut out either.

If the pistons don’t have the cut-outs you don’t need the shims.:)

  19. I’ve got a set of Brazilian ATEs, and they don’t have the cut outs.
