One of my favourite stop over points in the UK.

Sansend is just north of Whitby, which is a 20-30 minute walk away - if the tide is out you can go along the seafront.
There is a toilet block, which I think is open all night and a neat little cafe that sells ace cakes. If you like your fishing , then you can join the regulars casting off the sea wall in the early hours.

I've seen seal in the water and some fantatsic sunrises and sunsets. Robin Hood's Bay is a 12 mile cycle away - along a disused railway line from Whitby onwards. You walk along the cliff top path northwards too.

  4. The Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay area is possibly my favourite in the UK. Getting married in Ravenscar next month.

That would be a great way to finish the Lyke Wake Walk!

We love that part of Britain, Whitby, Sandsend, Runswick and Staithes, something about the area keeps drawing us back.

One day we will move to the area, we have both decided.

Not jealous of you Louey, honest :D enjoy!

Sadly, I've not been up there since last June, when the engine blew on the way back. I didn't have enough time to myself over xmas to venture as much as I wanted.

  8. Follow the old railway and just before the tunnel hang a right, that is a right down the Goat Track. Go down on a falling tide, you can get to Runswick Bay then back on the Cleveland Way path to the tunnel. On the scaurs there's an old steam shipwreck, the boiler is still discernable .

We where only thinking earlier that we ought to head up that way in June, following on from Dent, maybe Robin Hoods Bay then onto somewhere else. Derbyshire perhaps?

  14. Have they blocked the tunnels off now? Walked through them about 10 years ago.

Our doorstep, we don’t get out often enough. Last year was a big year for us, house move, garages to build and buses to bring home. This year we don’t have much to do at all apart from enjoy getting out and about :)

I did hear or read something somewhere that they were going to try and reopen some of the tunnels.

I think on my next visit I'm going to see about the walk north when the tide is out

  18. Yep that's on the cards with the tunnels.
You can do from Sandsend car park on a falling tide but need to set off as soon as Sewer Hole, that's the big pool that forms in front of it, is clear. There are a few escape routes after the Goat Track and before the headland that borders the south end of Runswick bay, but they are fisherman's tracks and climbs and it's like Jurassic Park around there. Also just around the headland is a fisherman's rope up to, I can't remember the name off the top of me head, always call it the Village of the Damned. Don't ask.
