VW T2 Pop Top Canvas Replacement?

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Daniel Williamson, Oct 24, 2018.

  1. Hi all, I need to replace the old canvas on our 74 VW T2 Bay (See pics for the roof type, it’s the one with 2 mushroom vents) I have found a couple of suppliers online for around £350 - £400 to replace the canvas. I’m trying to save a bit of cash but also to do a nice job, I noticied they are made from PVC coated polyester, has anyone had any experience of making their own canvas? You can get the same fabric/thickness from banner printers cut to size for around £80 - £100, it will need to be welded or stitched. What are your thoughts is it worth trying or should I pay for a replacement? Thanks in advance. Dan

If your old one can be used as a template there’s a bloke in Bristol who will copy it for you.
    Muchos cheap too.

  4. Thanks for your replies, do you have the bloke from Bristol’s contact details/website? Do you know roughly how much it costs? What are your thoughts on using a banner printer and then welding the canvas together?

You’ll do better to call him.
He’s a one man band so I doubt he ever replies to emails!

sounds like this guy needs to template yours and then keep the details on file. I will want one at sometime, I know @paradox was talking about it too. There's a few of us with the later Devon mushroom roof on here!! :)

These aren’t his business (he’s a sail maker) so you won’t get anything like the original colours etc. Think more along the lines of blues, reds, greens etc. Basically boat canvas colours.
He’s probably only ever done 1 I’d imagine!

  16. Does he fit them or just supply material? Got a picture of yours?

Just makes and supplies the canvas. You’d need to fit it yourself.
Probably a photo in my show us yours thread.

Might be worth asking whoever makes it to make it a few inches taller than the original. Mine was a bit of a bugger to fix as I fitted timber batons around the top and bottom edges and then flipped the canvas over them to screw down.
