Hello everyone, Picked up my '74 Bay on Monday and drove 200 miles home never going above 55. A good getting to know you trip and one where plans for the future began to form. Have been researching the T2 for months now and there is a lot to learn and I'm enjoying the experience. For the last 10 years I've owned a 2001 Range Rover with a 4.6 V8 and I did all the maintenance on it. A VW bay is an order of magnitude simpler to work on and I'm looking forward to that. Initial plans are cantered around drive-ability upgrades. Whatever I have to do to achieve it, but I must be able to cruise on the motorway at 70mph. The 1600 twin port needs whatever it takes to realise that. So guess I need a new engine? Will be storing the bay indoors over the winter so will have plenty of time to plan what to do next year. I won't pester the forum with lots of silly questions as I'm kinda old school and like to read manuals and stuff like that and of course I can use the search function. Anyone that's read this far and wants to suggest the best way to make a bay comfortable at 70mph on the motorway feel free to make suggestions. Carl.... AKA Lone_Wolf
Welcome from sunny Barnsley Carl, lots on here will say scooby conversion. Others will say type 4 engine or upgrade to a bigger type 1. Choice is yours really. Enjoy the ride
Ask lots of silly questions on here, everybody else does. I am thinking the Subaru engine experts will be offering advice. I would be interested in your low powered 1600 twin port when you come to sell it. I like slow.
70 on a motor way in a standard bay is pushing it hard , they will do it but in i found 60 more confortible
You could get it to cruse at 70mph but it’s going to cost thousands and what about the handling at those speeds. Personally I would learn to slow down and enjoy the trip.
Thanks for the welcome. Range Rover sold as I couldn't take the anxiety of waiting for the next expensive failure anymore or 16mpg. Not interested in Scooby conversions myself. Probably stick with a T1 motor I think unless I'm convinced by a good argument to go T4.
Even with the Subaru I don’t cruise at 70. I might hit 70 to overtake a row of trucks but, as others have said, you still have the handling and brakes of a less powerful vehicle.
Welcome! And yes, slow down and enjoy the ride! I have a 1641 tp engine with the single Solex carb. It pulls well enough and I cruised down the N13 to Bayeux at between 55 and 60 in the July heat which was perfectly lovely. A bit slower up hills but who cares when you're on holiday.
standard engine is the best engine easy to work on take out put in and parts are cheap enough, you will enjoy your wagon , down side is people waving all the time peolpe flashing and millions of questions , get used to people leaving notes on your window
There’s no replacement for displacement. Or scooby. Scooby is waaaaay cheaper (and probably more reliable as it’s well within original tolerances) if you can do it yourself. I hate to say it but if sitting at 70 is your no. 1 priority; you’ve bought the wrong vehicle. Edit; for the record mine will sit at 70 all day long if I want it to. You’ll soon find out you don’t want to!
Agree with above... You don't get a classic T2 bay to do 70mph in. It's all about the ride and the journey. Mines a 1600 and cruises nicely at 55...it feels safe at that speed, she'll go faster but I don't let her. Welcome along....Enjoy your bus.
