How much base and clear coat am I likely to need for the outside of the van (inside is being done in solid 2K).
I’m guessing base 4L for bottom half and 2L for top as it’s mixed 1:1, and then 6L of clearcoat?

  2. I used 2 pack on the bay back in the day
    The paint shop advised it.

    Hope it goes well

  4. Hi James, all the base I've used is mixed 2:1 + 10%, the clear is usually 4:1 + 10%. As for quantity, if your only doing outside then what you state seems about right.

  5. Hi James , 4 litres of basecoat mixed 1-1 , base and thinners will do the outside of a van with loads to spare , and 6 litres of clear coat 2-1 ( 2 clear-1 hardener )+ 10% thinners will be perfect for the top coat . Good luck t

  6. Basecote is always 1-1, 1 part base( colour ) 1 part thinners , the ratios you have written above are for a 2k paint usually a solid colour 2 paint, 1 hardener to 10-15-20% thinners , depending on how much flow you require, Not a base coat .cheers t

  7. Seems I’ve got my terminology wrong. I’ve always put down a layer of 2k colour that I refer to as base then 2k clear. You live and learn.

  8. Can I ask why you have opted for a base and clearcoat instead of a solid 2k colour?

From what I’ve read the finish tends to be a deeper shine. I suspect it’s much the same but I figure why not give it a go.

  10. If your using a good quality hs ( high solids) lacquer it defiantly will be over conventional 2k solid paint . Remember to buy the best you can afford , it will be worth it in the end.
Hi Myrtle , there is nothing wrong really with using a solid colour 2k , then clear coating over it , although you then need to flat the colour to key it for the clearcote rather than painting straight over the coloured basecoat . Same results just a lot more work

  12. Lechler is a good brand but as I said try and get there high solids clearcoat , a bit dearer but it if applied right will give you the look you want .
