  3. Question,,, I managed to get a GKN Lobro replacement CV joint for the van, it's part number 7 153 12 01 98 008, exactly the same as all 4 currently fitted. However this one is really stiff, to the point I need a bar to move it, now I know if they are 120° out they will be like this, though please see below, on the left is the new joint, on the right is an old joint (shiny balls), the right is easy to move the left is stiff to the point of locked up solid. They to me look to be assembled the same, is there a wear in time or should they be easy to move from new?

I’ve just had to buy 4 new ones (Lobro too) I’ve not tried really moving them but they seemed pretty tight too.

  5. Shouldn’t be tight ...you should be able to move them fairly easy by hand ....i’d also bin the new rubber ...as they won’t last a year

  6. Something is wrong then I can just about get a small amount of movement if I really push one side with my thumbs to the point of painful. It's even hard work with the outer fixed and a bar in the centre to get movement. I wondered if I needed to excersize it a bit first before fitting.

  7. Something wrong there .. you can put them together wrong and it will cause similar. Was it new or SH ?

  8. New sealed box.

  9. Take it back

There is a difference in the two on the picture. The machining on the end of the ring that the ball bearings sit inside is different. I seem to remember there's a thread about this which has an old drawing of an exploded view showing the right and wrong way for installation .....i will look for the thread

1371437.jpg I've found the image on the net but not the thread
I now remember why I remember the picture. It's to ensure you got the grove on the cv joint fitted
innermost near the rubber boot .

  12. Well it's been a while, the camper is very much not forgotten, it's just that during the summer months steam rally's and tractors take over.

I did however weigh this lot in along with some big industrial machines I've been stripping, came away with £250 for about 1.5 tonnes.

The current project, as started late September is to build a garage for the VW as I'm not liking the idea of spending another winter working in a makeshift vehicle tent. I have with a little bell cement mixer and so far 5 dumpy bags of 20mm to dust started making the concrete base. It's a good workout and I can make and lay about a cubic meter every 2 hours.

Now as the only way I know is to weld obviously this was going to be a steel framed effort, so a delivery of 50 x 100 and 50 x 50 box steel along with angle and flat arrived so I could produce this. As you can see it rises out from the old shed.

Then with a coat of high zinc red primer and some windows and doors.

I tiled the front to match the existing garage.

Next is to breather membrane the outside and then clad in vac-vac treated Scandinavian red wood.

    Workshop/ garage a great project.
I am wanting a small extension to rear of house but that means moving my garage back about 10 foot.
Strange I don't need planning permission for extension but I do to move the garage . The world's gone mad

  15. stonking work what is the wee tractor i like it :worship:

  16. The little tractor is a David Brown 30D, closest I’ll get to a 1950’s Aston Martin. Built in the same factory, at the same time, under the same management as the DB3.

  17. Well the little two and a half month project is just about complete.

    Cladding in progress
    [IMG]

Completed and creosoted (well creocoat, closest I could find to the proper stuff, smelt like Diesel so should be ok)

With lighting, I used 10 x 10 watt LED halogen equivalents.

Well it fits, nicely too, with room to pop the top.

And with the humongous door closed. One more cladding plank and some batten needd to finish.

What a nice view, now time to get back to the original project.

Just a few finishing touches needed to the camper house and were away. This was very much needed, I'm looking forward to getting back to working on the van, and now weather need not slow or stop me.

  20. I'm in awe of your skills and salvage of the bay.

If ever you get stuck for work you're welcome to come and do mine properly, rather than the bodge job I'm making!
