  1. Whohoo, it's alive !!

Timing belt wasn't right which is embarrassing but luckily no interference so valves survive my cock up.

    Really pleased, thanks @pkrboo

  5. another little modification that might help someone out somewhere.

My cabling from acc pedal is a bit bespoke, mine was a 1975 bay but its a crossover of sorts so had early and late bay components.
The accelerator cable was a dog leg to the pedal and the plain cable end went to the prototype bay vacuum kick down on the auto box. Since i changed my box to a late bay one its now a cable kickdown and the cable attaches to the box using a push on/clip on cup. The problem there is I have something on each end so couldn't feed the cable through the conduit to protect it.

And the cable I bought from RJES was probably measured up using a poundland tape measure.

i wasn't happy relying solely on a solderless nipple at the engine end (after cutting 20 inches off the not so cheap RJES cable) so I also bought a mountain bike brake cable and then fed both ends (mountain bike cable and solderless nipple) into both accelearator spring return housings (one is overdrive one, is accelerator but both can be used simultaneously). Then I fed the 2 cables into one of these useful joining clamps which does up with 2 allen keys.
2 into 1 for extra strength.

Then I thought about the accelerator pedal and figured if I could weld one of these to the dog leg then I could feed a standard cable into that and adjust it + I could now use the conduit.

    So I did.

And as simple as it is, it works really well.

can only admire your work. I got fellows to do mine, occasionally I get what appears to be a hot start issue. I don't know my way around the added subaru electrics but do you know if I could wire in a hot start relay just like I would have done if it was still air cooled?

I had a similar issue but it was down to fuel pump. Was fine when started and driving but switch off and try to restart it didn’t want to know. Once cooled it was fine. Changed the pump to a genuine Bosch and all is fine.

Also had to move the pump so it was lower than the tank

  8. thanks @Razzyh
Did yours still turn over, mine sort of seems dead when it does it.

  12. Mine doesn't turn over so think I will try a hot start relay then.

Does yours just not turn over when it plays up, or turn over but not start?

I would do the hot start relay then, and clean up your earth strap while you are under there. Chances are that will sort it.

  17. Bus gearbox

what the gearbox one or is there another I should check?

  18. If it’s only doing the issue when hot just replace your starter.
Got my old one from GSF for about £90

  19. @Dubs What does the earth strap between gear box and chassis actually do? the gearbox was taken out and some ratios changed and they painted it? I have been under and taken that earth strap off and cleaned up and it already seems better. Haven't run it hot though. Might buy a new one and take it all off again.

@StuF starter isn't that old I bought a new one a couple of years ago.

  20. The starter earth's through the gearbox but having the earth strap is required. As the engine and gearbox is rubber minutes and isolated form the body. So no actual definite connection to earth unless you have an earth strap.

I have fitted and earth lead in the engine to. Belt and braces.

You can get earth cables from Halfords very cheap.
