New Hello, Roof Cap.... any recommendations? We are looking at the Devon RoofCap Starter Kit - Just Kampers(J11649) It is pricey but we need to cover the existing roof. The idea seems good & should last well. From @Jude 33
I fitted one around 2005/6. Easy to fit, but do get help with the updated springs fitting (and take no responsibility for any helpers ensuing hernias/prolapse!). I didn’t fit a skylight as thought it was just inviting trouble. Never had any issues with the cap and no leaks.... at least not from the roof cap :/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I fitted the JK roof cap to our camper a few years back due to the leaking seals, was easy to fit, the uprated springs make it better than before. I went the same path as Ermintrude and didn't bother fitting the skylight tunnel, though the same that it would just be inviting a fresh leak potential. I bought half a dozen of the squeeze grips/G clamp type things to compress the cap onto the roof when it was glued to make sure it held, never had any problems with it since fitting so gets my seal of approval so far.
Yep. I went with the JK roof cap and springs. I fitted a Fiamma roof cap which does make a difference on warm days. I made myself a special tool for compressing the springs into the struts as I was convinced I would lose and eye or a gonad or both trying to get them in.
Hahahaha! I had two strapping blokes helping me get the springs in. All I had to do was get the notch thing lined up but seemed to take forever and the more they swore st me the more I laughed and kept missing the notch. Good times. Though it cost me ... Did refurb on ours over winter, re rivetted, strengthened, new rubbers and vinyl cost less that £150 and no leaks. Fitted 2mm pvc cladding for a shower first but could get rubber seal on evenly.
Wow ~ thank you everybody for your great information & funny stories about the adding a roof cap. I am tempted to go for the hands on, DIY version to save some ££££, but this renovation has been going on for over 2 years & we still have the paint to put on, the dash to fit back in, fit the furniture, install the rock 'n' roll bed.... (sort out new cushions) Look into Fridge options, research solar panel........ So I think that the roof cap - will be a good product & will last & will save hours on the garage (well some hours!!!) Then we had a decision.... I thought bonding on the top of the roof on the rubber seal - the highest point & clamp down.... My other half, John, thought bonding onto the ali sides & clamping sideways to pull the roof cap & metal together.... Before we balls it up...... how did you fit yours?
The final question.... we found the Just Kampers Installation guide - helps with the photos.... The spacing for the 8 coach bolts..... how close to the corners did you put yours? We were thinking 2 bolts per corner - about 10/15 cm along the edge away from the corner...... Where are yours?!!! J & J Need to get a life - Saturday night at home on laptop A few more months - will be in VW parked up somewhere
Can you not just TIG weld the outer and inner part of the roof and then fiberglass paste the joint? Seem a lot of faff just to stop the seal leaking
